KNOWING GOD
Ps. 9:10
Scripture, “And they know Thy
Name, will put their trust in
Thee”.
To know God has been the
desire of man in all ages. This
was voiced in the statement
of Job found in (Job 23:3) “Oh
that I knew where I might find
Him”. And is further embodied
in the language of the Apostle
Paul; (Phil. 3:10) when he said,
“That I may know Him and
the power of His resurrection.”
etc. The beautiful story of the
three wisemen is actually a
portrayal of this desire they
said, “We have seen His star,
we have come to worship Him,”
or to get acquainted with, or
know Him.
Paul said to the philosophers
on Mars hill, “Him whom you
ignorantly worship, (or worship
without really knowing) declare
I unto you.” This is the tragedy
of the world, and even the church
today, so often we worship with-
out knowing whom, or why we
worship. Many times we do not
know God’s purpose in our lives,
or what He seeks, or is able
to do for us. Our concept of Him
is hazy and limited, until we
grope after Him, as though
He were afar off.
The Psalmist was not theoriz-
ing when he uttered the words
of our text, “They that know
Thy name will put their trust'
in Thee.” He was suggesting
that we know more than the
titles, God and Lord, that we
know His Character, His nature,
His attributes in His relation-
ship to man, all of which is
set forth in theHebrewnam.es
of God. Consider these wonder-
ful names and their signifi-
cance, it will bring a revela-
tion, or unfolding of God which
will eclipse, or overshadow
everything else in our life.
Hosea declared that people were
destroyed because of a lack
of knowledge of God. If this
is so, and we must accept it
if we believe God’s word, then
the acquisition of the knowledge
of God should build us up,
strengthen us, and enlarge us
in every sense of the word,
causing us to know Him in
a greater way.
We find God first revealed
as “Elohim” . the mighty God,
the God of all God's, the Crea-
tor, the Sustainer, the Breast-
ed One. This pictures Him as
keeping order, supplying life
to the creature of His hand.
This is confirmed by Jesus
Himself when He declares in
(Jn. 14:6) “I am the life”, al-
so in the Greek translation
of (Rev. 1:18) “I am the Liv-
ing One”, or the giver of
“Life”.
He is revealed as “Adonai
God”, or the God who owns
us, and is our master by right
of creation originally, and re-
demption now. As our owner
and master He is vitally con-
cerned about us, and expects
full allegiance from us.
Again we find Him revealed
as Jehovah, the One who will
for your life...
WORSHIP TOGETHER THIS WEEK

always be. We find here per-
sonal, continuous, absolute ex-
istence, the God of righteous-
ness, holiness, and love. Jeho-
vah is derived from the He-
brew verb “Havah” which
means “To be, or Being”, and
is closely related to another
verb, “Chavah”, to live, or
life, It tells us that Jehovah
being eternally alive is able
to give “Eternal” life to us.
(Jn. 17:3) “And this is eternal
life that they might know Jeho-
vah, the only true God”.
One of our first covenant
relationships with God is en-
tered into when we come to
know Him as “ Jehovah-Jireh”.
This compound Hebrew name
means that God will be seen
in every place of need, in every
hour of anguish, and will pro-
vide for every contingency of
life. He is a whole God for a
whole man. Paul verifies this
in (Phil. 4:19) when he said,
“My God shall supply all of
your need according to His
riches (or ability) in glory by
Christ Jesus.” It definitely
tells us that God will provide
a remedy for our sins.
We see in another of His
names, “Jehovah-Rophe”, that
He takes care of the physical
needs of man, for this name
means, Jehovah heals, or the
Lord is our healer. Holy Writ
is replete with one example
after another of His willingness
and power to heal. The writer
of the Epistle to the Hebrews,
(Heb. 13:8) tells us that “Jesus
Christ, the Messiah, is always
the same, yesterday, today, yes
and forever-to all ages.” (Amp.
Ver.)
He is revealed as “Jehovah-
Nissi”, the Lord our banner.
To men from time immemorial,
a “Banner” has typified all
that a man stood for, his coun-
try, his life, his honor, his
security. It has caused mans
spirit to be revived, it has
inspired, encouraged, and caus-
ed him to wax bold. Here God
tells us, through the medium
of His name, that He who has
never been defeated, or lost
a battle, will personally be our
“Banner”.
We find in “Jehovah-Sha-
lom”, the Lord our peace, a
great source of comfort and
satisfaction, for here He de-
clares Himself the only source
of peace. Having Him, we have
peace, for He is the “Peace”.
The world about us is in a
state of turmoil, people are
filled with a spirit of discon-
tent and unrest, but in the midst
of this situation, in Him we
have peace,, and will be un-
troubled regardless of things
about us.
While unrighteousness reigns
rampant, and evil is all about
us, He comes to us as “Jeho-
vah- Tsidkenu”, the Lord our
“Righteousness”, or the one
who leads us in the right paths.
This path may run through the
evil of the world, but we can
come through with our garments
unspotted, for His righteous-
ness repels these things.
We see Him as “Jehovah-
Rohi”, the Lord our shepherd,
leading us into green pastures,
beside the still waters, even
holding our hand as we cross
the valley of the shadow of
death, anointing our head with
oil, and overshadowing us with
His wonderful mercy.
Trodding life’s pathway with
us He reveals Himself as “Jeho-
vah-Shammah”, the ever pre-
sent One. As if to rout every
fear, dispel every doubt, and
give absolute assurance of His
presence, Jesus cries out in
(Matt. 28:20) “Lo, I am with
you always, even to the end
of the age' ’.
In these names there is a
progressive revelation of Jeho-
vah meeting every need as it
arises in the experiences of
His redeemed people-Saving-
Sustaining-Strengthening, and
keeping those who know Him.
If we know Him, we will find
it easy to worship Him, to be-
lieve, to trust, to commit every
situation and need into His
hands, knowing that He is able.
