Is it a sign of old age?
My life has very little rou-
tine to it. It never has. We eat
at night when we get a chance
(usually about eight P.M..,but
sometimes at ten or eleven.
Lunch depends on what day of
the week it is, and how busy we
are.
We go to bed when we get
through with "chores".
Not having children, I sup-
pose it has been easier not to
have a routine? Although I've
had parents tell me it is just he
opposite, that with kids you
don't get a chance at doing
things routinely.
But, whether farming or in
the newspaper business, we
just have never known that at
a certain time a certain thing
would happen.
It never bothers me at all. At
least, I didn't think it did.
The one thing in my life that
has been constant for the past
23 years (celebrated that an ni-
versary the first week in
March), is getting out a paper.
Come fire, flood, hail or high
water, come sickness, surgery
or stress, we put the paper to
bed on Wednesday night. That
hour is special. When the mail
bags are gone and I have that
solid, black and white copy of
a newspaper in hand, it's time
to relax for a while.
The only time we ever pub-
lish early is on Thanksgiving,
or if the Christmas Holiday or
New Years Holiday falls on a
Monday or Tuesday.
We absolutely, positively
never, ever publish early for
any other reason.
That is the one constant
point in my life. I don't even
think of weeks as running
Sunday from to Sunday...they
run Thursday through
Wednesdays!
So, this week we had to pub-
lish early because of the six of
us working on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays, four of us have
to take a State Test for our
First Responder certification.
When we discovered the test
would be on a Wednesday it
didn't bother me...big deal, just
this once we'll publish early.
But as the date has gotten
closer and closer I've become
more and more jumpy!
I'm not particularly worried
about the test...just about pub-
lishing early.
There is no reason to
be..we'll make it, just like we
do anytime there is two day's
work to be done on one day.
But it just isn't right. It
doesn't FEEL right to be do-
ing this without a holiday!
I suppose the next thing I'll
get upset about is when they
don't have my favorite brand
of cooking oil or furniture pol-
ish?
Oh, I hope not. I suppose
I've reached a point in life
where I'm not as flexible as I
used to be? I don't know..I just
know that publishing a day
early feels incomplete, strange
and downright confusing!
Top it off with the time
change and I'm a really a bas-
ket case. Help! At least things
should be back to normal next
week.

There are a lot of people enjoy-
