A tale of a stove
Last Thursday after an early
fire call (did you know hot tubs
will burn?), two medical calls
, and a long day at work I fi-
nally was dragging myself to-
wards home when Marilyn
Glover waved me down.
"Have you seen the stove at
the fire station?" she asked. I
told her no and she had me
follow her down to the fire sta-
tion. There, in the kitchen on
the new stove was the biggest
mess imaginable. White, dried
foamy stuff was splattered all
over the cook top. Granules of
dirt were stuck in place, along
with what looked like splin-
ters. We took our fingernails
and scratched at the mess,
sniffing it to see if it was iden-
tifiable. It didn't have a smell.
We both stuck our heads up
under the vent-a-hood and dis-
covered that whatever it was
had apparently exploded,
splashing up under there too.
Puzzled, we looked in the
trash cans to see if we could
find any "incriminating evi-
dence". Nothing.
I hit the vent- a-hood button
and the fan made a strange
clunking sound.
Both of us stuck our heads
up under the hood again and 1
yanked down the silver grill.
Immediately we were deluged
with sticks, grass, dirt and de-
bris! Hot on the heels of our
mystery, we leaned closer and
Marilyn reached up and
turned the fan.
It's a shame there wasn't a
video camera on hand, for
when the wing flopped down
in our faces Marilyn and my-
self nearly knocked our heads
off yanking out from ofT the
vent a hood. I hit the hood rim,
she clobbered herself on the
other side and we both let out
a yell!
We stood staring at one an-
other in horror. YUCK, we
had been using our fingers to
scrape bird......well, you have
the picture now.
Gingerly, Marilyn worked
at prying the dead Starling out
of the fan on the vent -a-hood.
It was quite dead, although not,
fortunately, long dead. The
idiot bird had built a nest in
the vent pipe and then become
trapped.
Then it was sterilize the stove
time. We scrubbed, disinfected
and scrubbed some more. The
grill went home to go in the
dishwasher (after a sterilizing
rinse down) and everything Is
back to normal, spick and span.
But we both spent a long,
long time scraping under our
fingernails, scrubbing our
hands and generally mutter-
ing words like " nasty ", "yuck"
and less printable things. We
tried not to remember every-
thing we ever heard about bird
mites! Gross!
It really is a shame, though,
that someone wasn't on hand
to have the biggest laugh of the
week watching the two of us
nearly hash our brains out over
one little dead bird!

Too Late-Tliere is a
wealth of unexpressed love
in the world. It is one of the
chief causes of sorrow
evoked by death: what
might have been said or
might have been done that
never can be said nr done.
