You can sure tell who your real
friends are in a pinch !
I believe 1 have discovered
the real, true way to test friend-
ship. It seems pretty infallible,
and boy, have I sorted 'em out
this last week!
To begin with my brother-in-
law called one Saturday night,
upset because his cat had been
run over and left behind three
kittens-who were only three
days old.
Okay, so I'm a sucker, but I
just had to try and raise them.
I am fortunate??? to be able
to bring little bottle babies such
as kittens or puppies to work
with me, which most people can't
do.
Well, I eye dropper fed them
for a few days, then switched
them to the bottle. They were
changed and bathed as often as
any infant, fed every four hours
day and night (that's right, I
stumble around in the dark
warming bottles like any
mother) and generally kept
things going nicely.
Of course, we had promised
our niece and nephew an over-
night trip this past weekend.
That meant I needed a baby
sitter. And not everyone knows
about raising kittens. It takes
care and patience, and one
doesn't always succeed.
Being the hovering, over-pro-
tective type of person I am I
began screening prospective
baby-sitters in my mind, made
up a mental list and began to
talk to them. ,
Of course, anyone who works
"off" or at a public job can't be
taking time to warm bottles
and feed squeaking kittens
(which look a lot like white rats
at this stage). That eliminated
about two thirds of my candi-
dates immediately. The num-
ber of people who simply looked
at me and said "You must be
out of your mind!" was really
high.
Three friends admitted they
knew absolutely nothing about
the business, but would do their
best. They will never know just
how touched I was by that.
Finally, Sue Sheppard, who
has raised raccoons, puppies
and kittens, said she would be
glad to baby sit for me. At last,
someone to trust, someone with
the skill and someone with the
time! She's my hero!
I heard a little "prayer" once
that says "May those that love
us love us, and may those that
don't love us, may God turn
their hearts. But if He can't
turn their hearts, may he turn
their ankles, that we may know
them by their limping". That's
really not necessary, all you
need to do is ask people to baby-
sit infant kittens...bingo!! you
find out who your real friends
are!

To the Editor:
Is something wrong in Bogata? Is
our community really running as
smoothly as it should?
Recall two weeks ago a letter to the
Editor concerning the way our city
park is "not" being maintained and
the park board that has yet to be
created.
An then last week the Sewer and
Water Superintendent and his assis-
tant seemingly walked out on their
jobs? At least that is the way it ap-
pears. But we know first hand the
reasons why these employees finally
gave up their jobs. Think about the
quality of water we have in this town.
Some of the best water you'll find.
Right? Sure it is. You know it, and we
know it. Most of us take it for granted.
Have you ever thought about what it
takes to keep our water this way?
Probably not, but that's okay. This
administration would like you to be-
lieve that they were taking care of the
employees that take care of you. But
that's not really the whole story. You
know the part in the paper that said
the employees were approved a 6%
pay raise. That's true. It was a last
minute effort. Sort of too little too
late.
You may not know it but being a
water department employee carries
some tremendous responsibilities and
some very real health hazards. Every
day these employees are exposed to
Hepatitis, Commonly found in sewer
water. Hepatitis is something to he
concerned about. It is a serious and
often fatal disease. Also working with
Chlorine is extremely dangerous.
Exposure to Chlorine fumes can be
fatal. A long time back Wyatt Bush,
your former superi ntendent had asked
for air pacs, explaining the dangers of
working around these fumes. He knew
first hand what it is like because he
had been exposed and became very
ill due to inhaling Chlorine fumes.
Now, and only after hearing from an
outside source that air pacs are re-
quired for safety, your council acts
and approves something Wyatt had
asked for a long time age.
Wyatt Bush had been a loyal, hon-
est, caring employee for you. He
knows and understands that one mis-
take from him or his help could en-
danger all the citizens of Bogata.
Wyatt has spent 11 years serving
Bogata. When he took over the duties
of Superintendent he immediately
reduced the water department chemi-
cal expenditures by thousands of
dollars a year. To my knowledge he
never was recognized for this. Re-
member a few weeks ago when
Wyatt's picture was in the paper for
receiving a plaque from the Texas
Natural Resource Conservation Com-
mission? The article failed to men-
tion that this is in recognition of no
failed water samples over a five year
period. Wyatt has never had a failed
water sample. The State just started
acknowledging them the past five
years.
Wyatt has worked week ends,
nights and holidays when most of us
were relaxing and enjoying our free
time. Wyatt hasn't had a real day off
since the department was reduced to
two employees. Sure he takes a day
off every now and then, but he's still
on call. Most places give some type
of compensation for being on call,
but not Bogata. He does get time and
a half compensatory time for over-
time worked. But guess what. He's
stilt on call!
When Wyatt asked at a recent coun-
cil meeting that all employees should
be treated equal is when he really
rocked the boat. One of his concerns
was fair pay for what the job calls for.
Wyatt has never asked for a raise
until just recently. For years he has
watched as other employees were
moved up in pay and he was passed
over. Wyatt just finally got fed up
\Vith the lack of respect and recogni-
tion for what they were doing. These
employees took their jobs seriously
but we feel the administration didn'.t
You have a couple of fine indi-
viduals on the council that do care
and would like to do the right thing.
They need help! The citizens of
Bogata need to attend some council
meetings and see how their city is
being run.
A special thanks to David Rozell,
Charles Don Lewis, Danny Brown
and Teresa Smith for their support.
You may think we are biased when
we say we're proud of Wyatt Bush
and Pat King for the job they've done
and the way they handles themselves
in this controversy. Well, we are.
Wyatt would make any parents proud.

To The Bogata News:
I do not know exactly what has
happened at City Hall, but I think our
City Fathers should give some seri-
ous consideration to what has hap-
pened in the water department.
We travel quite a lot and drink
water at many places. We have had
water that tasted like mud or was over
chlorinated and even some that did
not look quite clean.
I think Wyatt Bush has done an
excellent job keeping our water so
clear and good tasting. Believe me,
we have a treasure in our water sys-
tem and we should take care to keep
it that way. We know what Wyatt can
do so why don't we just raise his
salary to a suitable amount and see if
we can get him back.
One of the best assets this town has
is its water (There is a lot to be said
for its people too. I love Bogata and
hate for it to lose any good thing that
it has.)
Sincerely yours,
Lou Ada Franklin
Editor:
Wasn't that a great Homecoming
on April 12. Are they really getting
better each year or is it that I am just
getting older and appreciate them
more?
The food was good as usual. The
program was very good. I thought it
was great to have a hometown guy on
the program.
After what the class of 1957 Home-
coming Committee did to me, I can
only say," Thank You- you sneaky
kids." That was a very moving, emo-
tional experience for me. To all of
those involved in that part of the
evening, I wish to say a big Thank
You.
I thought the classes of 1941 and
1942 had a very successful reunion.
We had a very good turn out at the
Rosalie Community Center. Also
Jack Dodd did a good job feeding us
at noon.
Sincerely
Jean & Charles Wilkinson
