Rains Helpful - Harmful
K'.
By Herb Brevard
Recent rains in East Texas have
gotten plants off to a good start this
spring. Christmas trees are ap-
proaching the shearing stage in many
areas, according to James Chandler,
forester.
Cool, wet weather which has been
occuruj^n much of East Texas is
conduH^o dampening off disease in
vegetable gardens. To prevent this
damage. Dr. George Philley, plant
pathologist, suggests using a broad
spectrum fungicide to treat the seed
or buy treated seed
Philley says that the peach crop in
East Texas may be down to 30 per-
cent of normal in some areas. Both
late cold weather and the shortage of
chilling hours during the winter af-
fected the peach crop. Even with a
short crop, additional peaches may
fall off due to the cold damage or lack
of good pollination. Very little thinn-
ing costs will be incurred this year

Dear Editor:
I have a few words in response to
the letter published last week, concer-
ning your votes for road
commissioner.
I admit, I don’t know what other
duties of the office entails. Be it
understood, I’m speaking only of the
upkeep of the country roads,
specifically the one I have to travel.
I completely agree with the entire
letter, especially the part about the
people that only drive on city streets
and state highways and the few that

never leave city limits. They have no
rights whatsoever to grumble and
complain about what we have to say
about the conditions of the country
roads. We, the people that do have to
get through these mud holes each day
all winter. Mud holes so bad a four-
wheel drive truck or a tractor gets
stuck in the middle of the road. It was
reported to the responsible person,
but was never fixed all winter and
summer of 1984-85. I’m proud to say
Mr. Dicltey saw to it that it was fixed
in late 1985. This is the first winter
that these roads are in passable
condition.
Just a statement about the possibili-
ty of a Department of Corrections
Prison in our area. Please, let’s put
our efforts to use in finding a place to
dump our trash. This town needs it
desperately.
Let’s keep the commissioner we
have for the maintenance of our coun-
try roads.
Thank you.
Bonnie Smith
