Faster than a bullet, swifter
than a speeding train, almost
top quick for the eye to
catch....that's a startled
FROG!
As I was working around
oar front pond the other day I
kept scaring frogs, from tiny
ones to Horace (pronounced
hoarse, in tribute to his deep,
raspy voice) the big brown
bull frog.
And, to a frog, they all made
a single mighty leap from the
bank to the water and safety.
AU, that is except for one tiny
specimen who was so light that
he made a manful, (womanful,
frogful??) leap into the pond,
landing on a bit of moss that
springboarded him like a skip-
ping rock across the surface of
the water.
Now, as I pulled weeds my
brain, never given to peaceful
relaxation, began turning and
turning about the nature of
frog flight.
I’ve watched frogs leap and
land for many, many years.
I've heard the oid expression
about "If a frog had wings he
wouldn't get his (you-know-
what) busted". But, there is a
question about frog flight, or
really, about their landings.
Here’s the question, who of
you out there has the answer?
When a frog leaps does he
land in the water head first,
feet first or belly first?
They move so fast it’s difficult
to see them at all, much less ac-
cess their landing attitude!
I realize that out in Calavan. ;
County, which Mark Twain Im-
mortalized with jumping frogs,
they can probably answer the
question of how frogs land on
land (pardon that pun) but what
about water landings?
I actuallv went back to the
pool later to scare a few more
amphibians up and out into the
water, but l am unable to tell.
If they hit the water head first
they should make a nice dive.
The; sound like they belly fiop,
as louda plop and as many ripples
as they stir up
I don'tsee a reason to enter the
water feet first at all, but 1 can't
prove they don't!
So, if any of you out there share
my senseof curiosity, my sense of
quest and need to know how a
frog hits the water, just give me a
call. 1 know It isn't important,
but I'd really like to know!

39 die in Labor Day weekend traffic accidents
The Department qf Public Safety
had estimated that as many as 40
persons could die in traffic accidents
in Texas during the 78 hour Labor
Day weekend, which continued
through midnight Monday, Septem-
ber 2nd.
The final count, as of 3 p.m. on
September 3 was 39, with a good
many being alcohol related.
Also, any seriously injured vic-
tims who die within thirty days of
their injury also will count as Labor
Day Holiday fatalities, so the even-
tual death toll could still go higher,
the DPS office says.
