with no warning of what was
about to take place, 6,000 to
8,000 residents of Galveston
lost thelr-Hves- 69 years ago
Monday In the most deadly hur-
ricane In the history of the
North American continent.
By September 9 the storm had
reached North Texas. Winds
subsided, but heavy rains
brought to an end a drouth which
had prevailed throughout Au-
gust, causing the cotton outlook
to decline sharply.
While death and devastation
in the Galveston area left a
blight that lasted for ye-.'s,
North Texas cotton farmers
found their fortunes reversed.
What they had appraised dis-
mally September 1 turned out
to be the greatest cotton Arop
ever produced.
Bolt weevils had not migrated
from Mexico at that time.
Other Insects now so common
In cotton fields of Texas were
likewise absent. Rich soil and
a late fall collaborated with an
ample supply of moisture to
achieve results never before
attained. __
Another hurricane season
prevails and before It passes
Texas may get another devas-
tating, death-dealing storm,but
unlikely to compare with what
happened 69 years ago.
Tax Reminder
For “Students
September back to school
time has finally arrived for
Mama--or much too soon for
Junior. Going back to school
does create one small Income
tax problem for those students
who worked during the summer.
Nowadays this Includes most of
the senior high school students,
as well as college students or
summer vacation. Ordinarily-
the students worked In Jobs that
'required their employer to
withhold Income tax and social
security tax from their pay
Check. The law requires their
employer to issue them a W-2
within 30 days after they leave
the Job. The students will need
to carefully put away this W-2
until January 1, 1970. Ordi-
narily If they do not work else-
where, they will get all of thalr ,|
Income tax withheld refunded,*
provided they file a Form 1040
with the Internal Revenue Ser-
vice. Of course they are not
required to file uniess they
make $600, but IRS can’t send
their money back until they do
flle.N The students that lose the
W-£\s usually find that the em-
ployer will give them a duplicate
--but only after at least one, and
usually a series of tongue lash-
ings.
