Just one of those things that
happen to ME!
It seems to be a foregone con-
clusion that when Thomas and
I go on vacation something
weird will happen. It never in-
terferes with us having a good
time, but it's always a little
strange!
We had never really seen
Wales, and a bargain airfare to
London came up so that off we
went!
Upon arrival May 2nd, it
was quite warm, but we were
told it was supposed to turn
unseasonably cold. Did it ever!
Iam a Celtic history aficio-
nado, so we took a hike through
the rain to a dolman, or portal
tomb one day. The next day we
drove down a long country road
to see another portal tomb, this
one quite large and famous.
These grave sites are located on
private land, and the owners
are required to give public ac-
cess to them....but they don't
have to do it willingly.
At the gate was a sign that
said all visitors to the tomb must
walk. It was good, long hike
down a long, stone walled lane.
Walking problems or not, I
wanted to go, so we set out We
had barely started when a few
drops of rain fell and Medora,
my cousin, said she would go
back to the van, where our
driver/guide, Phil was waiting,
get an umbrella and rejoin us.
As we went a little further
the rain changed to round white
pellets...a cross between snow
and sleet! We trudged on,
rounding a corner out of sight
of the main road and travelling
through stone waited sheep
pens.
Thesnow became heavier, the
wind howled eerily, and the smell
of something unseen but obvi-
ously dead hit us. Since the grave
site is 5000 old, we worked on
the assumption that the dead
smell came from a sheep. We
didn't look to closely Just tucked
our heads down further and
trudged on through slush and
snow.
Finally, we arrived at the gate
into the pasture where the tomb
sat, way, way back off of the
road. We were less than thrilled
to discover that after toiling so
far, the lane was a mass of knee
deep, water filled ruts caused by
a tractor! There was absolutely
no way, without knee high rub-
ber boots, to get to our goal!
There was nothing else to do
but to turn into the teeth of our
"blizzard" and begin a long trek
back. We began to crust over
with snow....it made a long line
down the leg of our jeans, it
coated the hoods of our jackets,
it nearly froze our hands! There
we were, in May, on foot, with a
long walk ahead of us.
Our guide, however, had
other ideas. Sign or no sign, gate
or no gate, he couldn't stand the
thought of us out on foot in the
storm, so he braved the wrath of
the land owners to drive down
the lane after us. We tumbled
gladly into the warmth of the
van, but it still took about an
hour before I quit shivering. I
kept complaining that I was sure
I had frostbite, but that was an
exaggeration, since it really
wasn't freezing.
Oh, well, the snow sure looked
pretty up on top of the moun-
tains!
