Ten years from now it will be a
rare treat to see a person driving

M’e hear a good deal said about
folks not showing loyalty to their
party this year regarding our Presi-
dential candidates. One might do
like Jim Ferguson in regards to the
Senate race, pick the lesser of the
two evils and vote accordingly. But
we have a doubt in our mind as to
whether Jim actually did that thing.
In his opening speech as the Re-
publican nominee for President Mr.
Hoover touched lightly on the pro-
hibition question, stating that he
was for the enforcement of the
Eighteenth Amendment. If he is elec-

Coolidge or Wilson little respect can
be held out for law enforcement
along this line.
I We see in the daily papers where
the gasoline tax is to be reduced
from 3c to 2c after September 1.
Now if the big oil companies will
reduce the price of gas accordingly
us poor devils can come out on top,
but to raise the price of joy juice
means that we must continue to fill
up our Lizzies and have a high heel
time, regardless of expenses.

ter of New York City, has refused to

Democratic nominee for President.
The preacher is doing the wise thing
because no good would result from
such a discussion. It would stir up
strife and cause hatred on both sides.

a public discussion, because it al-

The water melon and cantaloupe
j crops have* been- * pretty fair over
Northeast Texas this year and many
fine ones have been placed on the
market. There is nothing finer than
a nice ripe juicy water melon. In
fact this writer likes water melon
as well as a Methodist preacher loves
fried chicken, and we have yet fail-
ed to find a preacher that doesn’t
like that soft of a dish.
Governor Dan Moody will support
the nominees of the Democratic pri-
mary, and more than that he will if
necessary stump the state for A1
Smith for President. That’s what we
call supporting the ticket from top
to bottom. The News has said all
along that Mr. Moody would do this
and so made the statement several
months ago and some of our readers
criticised us for making the state-
ment at the time. Now wonder what
they think of it?

Voter ’lowed the other day he
wasn’t such a dyed in the wool Smith
man as he was for whipping the dog-
goned Republicans at the ballot box
this fall. This writer has repeated-
ly stated that unless we can get the
wicked Republicans to bolt the Demo-
crats would not have a chance with-
in twenty years of electing a man
for President. But along comes A1
Smith of New York who believes it
can be done. If Smith fails it will
make it all the plainer that this writ-
er knew what he was talking about.
Bow-en Pope, editor and publish-
er of the Hamlin Herald, has made
quite a notable change to his pro-
gressive weekly paper, by “throwing
off” all ads from the front page.
This adds fifty per cent to the looks
of the paper, and any publisher issu-
ing an eight page all home print pa-
per should follow suit of Mr. Pope.
As long as the present editor of the
News owns and operates an eight
page all home print paper he will
never accept front page advertising.
It looks more like a newspaper not
to accept front page advertising.
There are some who claim they
cannot save money, despite the fact
they make good money from their
business or are paid good salaries.
The fact is easily solved, when one
takes into consideration there are
so many persons with a car out joy
riding, and we are not censuring a
person for so doing. That costs
money in oil and gasoline, to say
nothing of the wear and tear of the
car. Then there are others who spend
money for cigars and cold drinks,
the movies, and many other things
too numerous to mention. All these
cost money and one need not be sur-
prised to find that they cannot save
money. Many of these luxuries could
be curtailed to a certain extent if
we are only willing to pay the price,
and therein lies the success of thrift.
Start a savings account and add to
it weekly or monthly. That is tha
only way to get ahead.
The News certainly appreciates the
splendid co-operation among its read-1
ers who make it a habit to send or J
phone in local or personal news hap-
penings. You may think reporting
your visitors is of little importance
to readers of this paper, but that is
a mistake. People like to read of
the happenings of your friends or
relatives and it is this way that the
publisher is able to issue the kind
of paper he desires to from week
to week. Perhaps the news item may
be of small importance to you but
when countless numbers send in such
items weekly it helps make the paper
more readable so when you have vis-
itors or have been anywhere your-
self, kindly let the News know about
it.

LADONIA VS. FARMERSVILLE
GASOLINE BLAZE
The race for United States Sen-
ate is warming up between Mr. May-
field and Mr. Connally and from all
indications between now and the Aug-
ust primary it is going to get hot.
Both men are bringing a lot of per-
sonalities into the campaign. Here’s
hoping the best man wins. Each can-
didate charges the other as having
poor past political records. Both
have made fair progress about as
good as anyone has made at Wash-
ington, so there is little use to raise
so much campaign thunder in the
campaign. The people will decide
which man they want at the coming
primary, and it will be an easy mat-
ter to pick the winner.
