J. E. Trout, is very low of slow fever.
Prof. Franklin will begin teaching
our school here next Monday.
Mr. Hogan and family moved to Ok-
lahoma last week.
Mr. G. W. Moss returned Sunday
from a short visit to his pid home in
Tennessee.
Frof. C. Pearson left Sunday for
Union Valley, where he will teach the
public school the coming winter.
D Joe Laycock is critically ill of pneit
monia, brought on by being caught in
a sudden rain, and there is-but little
hope of his recovery. We unite with
his many friends in wishing his speedy
return to health.
W. J. Moss made a flying trip to
Ector Wednesday.
Mr. Henry Holland, of Cale, I. T.,
visited friends here last week. Henry
is an old-time citizen of this place, and
is always warmly welcomed by his
many friends.
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Cross, of Lan-
nius, visited Mrs. Cross’s mother, Mrs.
Pearson, last Friday.
Mrs. Sam Calvin, of Lannius, spent
last week with Mrs. Rob. Johnson.
Our Sunday School and prayer meet-
ing suspended last Sunday till spring.
This is to be regretted, and it is the
first time we have been without a Sun-
day School for nearly three years.

county, for four weeks previous to the
return day hereof, you summon W. L.
Grant* a non-resident of the state of
Texas, to be and appear before the
justice court precinot No. 2, to be
holden in and for the county of Fannin,
In said precinct No. 2 thereof, in the
town «f Savoy, on the first Saturday in
November, 1897, it being the 0th day of
said month, then and there to answer
the complaint of A. H. Jennings and
JL. O. Ellis lied in said court Against
the said W. L. Grant, in a plea of debt
for the ram of fifty-seven dollars and
ninety cents, principal due by account
as follows: For hauling 1458 feet of
Oedar piling from Ellis’ Ferry to Bells,
#72.90; credit by cash paid, $15; bal-
ance one,#57.90. Plaintiffs allege that

The child of Henry Dupuy, we re-
ported sick last week, died on Tuesday
night and was buried at the Carson
grave-yard on Wednesday.
A. L. Bellows and wife are entertain-
ing a ten pound girl at their house.
There was preaching Sunday at Lit-
tle Canejr by Rev. Rodgers.
Two weddings are reported in this
section Sunday, but we have no partic-
ulars, only that one was at Hr. Littles,
the other at J. E. luliens.
Wheat sowing still continues, add
the people seem determined to cut the
cotton crop some shorter than it is this
year.
The singing convention for this dis-
trict will meet at the Bsptist church
at Ector on the Saturdaj Before the
third Sunday In this month, will open
at 10 o’clock and cootinue through Sat-

The Farmers Alliance of John-
son county recently held a meet-
ing and appointed a committee to
form a plan to completely organ-
ize the farmers ot Johnson county
on a non-partisan basis. Monday
of last week that committee met
and sent forth the following res-
olutions as a call to the farmers:
Resolved, 1. That we invite
every farmer in the county to
join us in a thorough, compact,
non-partisan organization that
we may stand as a unit in defense
of our rights against the trusts
and combines now formed to con-
trol prices. ^

The No. 2 passenger train of
the Santa Fe which was held up
at Grant’s Station last night,
reached this city at 11:30 o’clock
this morniDg. Conductor Ald-
rich says that just after the train
halte# at grants a fusilade of
shots rang out on the ^ir

boarded the train, and one on the
engine. He and Rngineer H. D.
McCarthy were on the platform,
but ran and caught the train-as
it was moving out, the fireman
Henry ^fbel, being, compelled at
■the pdiq.t of a cocked revolver,

yards, about two qiileg distant.
The conductor, fqlly realising
that something was wrong,'left
the train at the stock yards, where
the robbers had ordered the train
stopped, and ran back to the sta
£ion. He telegraphed the news

bell. Iu the meantime, howegeri
the robbers, who wore false
beard's and were unmasked, cut
the mail coaqb, day and chair

explosion blew out one end of
the car, Abel being forced to
assist the robbers.
Once inside they picked out a

containing gold and silver coin,
after which they left the car, go-
ing jn the direction of the Malpoi
rocks, where iheif hol ses were
picketed. The express car was
on fire and Abel backed the en-
gine? and express car into the
other portion of the train, left
standing at the stock yards, and
jn consequence the express car,
day coach and chair car were
telescoped and all three burned
Route agents who went to the
scene last night returned to-day-
They state that the robbers did
not get, into the most, valuable
safe* which with two others,
badly warped and damaged. They
thinh, however, that fhe robber^
secured several hqndred dqllars.
The baggage was all removed'
before the fire got under^-ead^
way and" it was saved. The pas-
sengers were not molested. Thfe
robbers are thought to be several
