An attempt was recently made
to assassinate the czar of Russia.
But then he has grown so ac-
customed to it, that a little thing
like that doesn’t trouble him.
Hon. Joe Sayers has written
a lettler to our fellow townsman,
Maj. B. P. Hays, in which he
announces himself as squarely in
the race for governor in the elec-
tion of ’98.
It is just a little early in the
season for Candidates, tyit we are
already assured that the govern-
or’s chair will not be vacant
after next election for want of
applicants.
Prof. Nash, the founder of
Mary Nash College, died at his
home in Sherman last Friday
evening. He had built up and
leaves in a flourishing condition
one of the fine educational insti-
tutions of North Texas.
John Welch has enlarged the
Dodd City News and now has an
eight page paper. He says he
will keep it enlarged as long as
he can stand it. John will stand it
as long as his friends give him
the aid and encouragement he
deserves.

The last account of the pro-
gress of yellow fever showed an
increase of cases at New Orleans
and Edwardsville and a decrease
of cases at Mobile. In Texas
there is not a case, and the quar-
antine against Beaumont, Hous
ton and Victoria will be raised,
and traffic can once more get un-
der way.
We call the special attention
of our readers to the business ad-
vertisements in the News, and
will say that.if you want to get
real and first class bargains, read
the advertisements and then go
and do your trading with them;
tell them where you saw their
ads arid get a good bargain from
them.
A dispatch from El Paso of
the 28th says that there is now lo-
cated around that city a well or-,
ganized band of tramps who do
not hesitate to'commit any crime
by which they can accomplish
their desires. They are organ-
ized with a captain, judge and
police officers and work under
an unwritten law of their own.
Part of the gang are located near
the Mexican Central bridge,
others in Rand’s grove, while
others areJocated in an old
buildi^^^l^^ old Fort Bliss.
tfa
there are 10,000 tramps between
EL Paso and Kansas City, and
they intend to do up the town
unless they receive better treat-
ment. As winter approaches we
may well expect the South to be
overrun yith tramps, and each
and every town and city should
prepare to deal with them in a
proper manner. Take them up,
put them to'work on the streets
aud public roads and force them
to earn a living. By doing this,
the tramp nuisance can soon be
eradicated.

Ocr state officials by the rigid
quarantine rules Jtdopted by them
show a full determination to keep
the yellow fever out of Texas.
The plan adopted is the safe one,
but it does appedr that it is more
rigid than necessary, especially
at some places Galveston, for
instance, has quarantined agajnst
^Houston, simply because a negro
girl whq had been over to Beau-
mont came back to Houston sick.
Galveston is right to keep out
yellow fever for it has felt the
scourge, but it should be cautious
in quarantining against and there-
by injuring the business of a
sister city unless there was a cer-
tainty of the existence of fever. rhelom^Vi’tion'Jf ‘ slivep^ng rl“
