Dawson, N. M , UCt. 22.—Two hundred and thirty miners, ae
cordiug to an Unofficial estimate, wete Pn tom tied in shaft No. 2 of the
[Stag Gannon mines here Wheuan explosion deeurred »r> the property
iat 3 o’clock this afternoon.
Two men found on an upper level were taken from the mine to
i bight, Rescuers tfrere called from all parts of the southern Colorado
| Coal fields. The day shift working rthaft No. 2 numbered 230 persons.
The cause of the cxplosiou is unknown.
Fire has not broken out, though smoke was seen issuing from the
second level of the shaft. It was believed by rescurers that this smoke
Came from the explosion and not from fire
Immediately after the explosion all shifts were called to the work
Of rescue and those miners who were employed in other shafts were
put to work drilling through the debris which was said to have blocked
the mine below the second leVel.
The United States rescue car stationed at Trinidad was summoned
a id every available man in Dawson tonight was aiding in the attempt
to reach the entombed miners.
Rescuers worked heroically to s ipply air to the men. Deports
from the miue did not state at which level the explosion occurred, tint
simply that the mine shaft was blocked from the second level.
The mine property is owned by the Phelps Dodge company of
New York.

“DO YOU KNOW”
that the modern first-class picture
| show is now ;i permanent part of
our society! It’s influence is emi
nently good, and like all other
good things it is here to stay.
Thomas Edison says: “Moving
pictures have a tremendous ednea
tionat effect. They are an im
portaut factor in the woild’s in
tellectual development. They
have a great uplifting effect on the
morality of mankind. They wipe
out various prejudices which are
often ignorance. They create a
feeling of sympathy and a desire
to uplift the downtrodden of the
earth.” TUB GROTTO.
