Green chosen president of Texas

Steve Green a junior from
Midland was elected president
of the Association of Indepen-
dent Students in Texas (AIST)
at the group's organizational
meeting last weekend in Waco.

Garrett represented ACU at the
meeting
AIST began its formation last
November at a meeting at
Southwestern University. At last
weekend's meeting a constitu-
tion was ratified and officers
were elected There are over 40
private universities and colleges
in Texas and all are eligible to
join the group.
Plans for AIST this year are to
"first become a viable enterprise
and to solidify the membership.
We want to contact all 40
eligible schools and ask them to
become active members" com-
mented Green.
He added that the AIST is not
a political lobby but an aid to
upgrade the quality of life on
campus. All members wilt have a
chance to share their ideas and
policies on student services.
Volunteers going to Guatemala
to help with earthquake relief

Twenty men from ACU and
Abilene will fly to Guatemala
next Saturday to help build
shelters for some of the natives
whose homes were destroyed
during the earthquake Feb. 4.
The group consists of four
adults and 16 workers who are
primarily ACU students. Ed
Mathews a former missionary to
Guatemala will lead the group.
The other adult leaders
Include Bert Mosicr associate
professor of industrial educa-
tion; Bobby Wood youth
director at Hillcrcst Church of
Christ and Richard Chastain
minister of the Central Church
of Christ.
Mosier will be in charge of the
carpentry work and Wood will
be in charge of the survival
operations. Wood will also serve
as an on-site doctor and will help
maintain good health standards
at the group's living quarters.
The other members of the
group were chosen according to
four qualities: the ability to
speak Spanish carpentry exper-
ience survival training and

Students' Association and
Debbie Faulkner vice president
of the SA were elected Mr. and
Miss ACU Monday by the
studentry.
First runners-up were Fred J.
Allen and Marsha Jennings
co-chairpersons for this year's
Sing Song. John Vaughn and
Cindy Blanton host and hostess
for Sing Song 1976 were second
runnejs-up.

ACU was based on recognition
for services or honors the stu-
dents have brought to the school
Green has been attending the
planning sessions of AIST since
its beginning. He than asked
Lucado and Garrett to accom-
pany him to the first formal
meeting. These three became
involved in activities such as this
last year at the "Student Day at
the Capitol" sponsored by the
Independent Colleges and Uni-
versities of Texas (1CUT).

for the Texas Equalization Grant
during "Student Day at the
Capitol." TEG was ratified due

The group will work for about
a week with the Cakchiquel
Indians located about a half-
hour's drive from the capital.
They will work in another
nearby village if they have
enough time Mathews said.
He estimated that the two
villages contained about 10000
people before the earthquake
but said that the figure may have
been reduced by as much as 30
per cent because of the disaster.
There are about 2000 Chris-
tians in Guatemala Mathews
said but very few are Indians. A
church campaign will be held
among the Indians by a Spanish
national during the time of the
group's work.
After the daytime work of

ICUT's purpose is to save
small colleges and as a result
provide a better education
according to Lucado. AIST was
established for the students of
the 40 private schools of Texas.
"Private and public schools vary
so much this organization was
needed" added Green.
Next spring "I would like
AIST to take an active part with
ICUT during the "Student Day
at the Capitol" and help to
formulate the lobby" said
Green.

ule but he hopes the materials

work and the service for Christ .
. . a real group cohesiveness and
experience because this is one
way that the ACU student will
feel that he has applied his
Christianity in a practical way"
Mathews said.
There is n possibility that
about IS members.of the group
will stay and work an extra
week. The College Church of
Christ is providing the funds for
the group's work.
The church is also acting as a
holding organization for some of
the Guatemala relief funds. As
of last Friday the total
contribution was S85.0S3.17.

club and was a 1975 Home-

A business major from Scotts-
dale Ariz. John is president of

past president of the Student
Advisory Board. Cindy who is
secretary of the senior class is a
communications major from
Amarillo. She is a former Hill-
topper and was a 197S Home-
coming queen nominee.
"The Association of Indepen-
dent Students in Texas is
autonomous from the Indepen-
dent Colleges and Universities in
Texas except when functioning
as a student section such as the
"Student Day at the Capitol"
concluded Green.
ICUT was established in 1971.
A similar organization exists in
39 other states. Dr. Robert
Hunter vice president of ACU
and an officer in ICUT spoke
last weekend. Also Sen. John
Tower of Texas was the keynote
speaker.
