from Colleyville as vice president and

ICUT proposal seeks to double
'79-'80 TEG budget in '81 -'82
Clements Connally visit Abilene
Gov. Bill Clements and former Gov.
John Connally are on a state-wide "Round-
up for Reagan" campaign. Clements and
Connally presented their campaign
structure which is designed to "send
Carter back to the peanut farm" Wed-
nesday in the Abilene Civic Center.
The campaign is divided into two sec-
tions. The first known as the parent
committee deals with state-wide effort to
personally reach out to the Republicans of
Texas. The state has been divided into 12
regions in which Clements and Connally
The second part of the campaign is

campaign.
referred to it as "the basic building block
of the foundation." An estimated 3 million
homes will be contacted by a staff of more
than 40000 volunteers throughout the
state. The volunteers will be working
through phone centers or on their home
phones.
Clements said the campaign is essential
because only 20 percent of the residents in
Texas identify themselves as Republicans
whereas 35 percent identify themselves as
Democrats and 45 percent as Independents.
The Independent Colleges and
Universities of Texas in July proposed a
biennium budget of $45585695 to fund the
Texas Tuition Equalization Grant ap-
propriations for the 1981-82 school years.
Dr. Robert D. Hunter vice president of
ACU and executive vice president of ICUT
said the proposed budget was extremely
important to the Abilene area because the
three private institutions located here
need TEG appropriations to help their
students. Of the full-time students who
meet the program 50 percent will receive
grants said Hunter and 20 percent of that
number will qualify for grants as part-
time students.
During the biennium of 1979 and 1980
the total TEG appropriations were
$26030928. This amount was doubled for
the 1981 and 1982 school years because due
to increasing inflation the average grant
previously was too small said Hunter.
The Legislative Budget Board (LBB) is
a committee of five state senators and five
state representatives which will propose
the final state budget for 1981-1982.
Grant Jones one of the five state
senators on the LBB is from Abilene.
Hunter said anyone concerned about the
inclusion of the TEG budget into the 1981
state budget should contact Senator Jones.
In January 1981 the Texas Legislature
will convene for its 67th session. If the
requested TEG budget has been included
in the state budget proposal of the LBB
then it will be voted on during this session.
Hunter suggested that each one of the
150 state representatives and the 31 state
senators be contacted prior to the vote
next spring.
Who's Who candidates being considered
Ihe Student Life Committee met
Tuesday for the first of several meetings to
select 46 students for Who's Who in
American Colleges and Universities.
The final choices will be selected from
129 nominees. Garvin Beauchamp vice
president for Student Services said that
each name on the list will be considered
and voted on.
Beauchamp added that some highly
qualified people will not be selected
because the number is limited.
