Golf coach Vincc Jarrett hai placed
bl tights on an unprecedented na
tlonsl bid for a young ACU golf team
in hh first tpring here.
Jarrett said a finish in the top three
in ACU'a district would get the
Wildcats a national bid. A flrtt-pltcc
Lone Star Conference finish would
almott insure a spot in the top three of
the district.
The improvement of the team'i
freshmen will be an Important factor
in the team'a chances. ''It's all accor
ding to how my freshmen grow" Jar-
rett said. "We have such a young
team. I still have a feeling that we'll
win the conference. But It's according
to how we grow over the neat few
months. I hist hope the freshmen will
grow and learn how to manage
themselves a little bit better."
Tilts year's conference champion-
ship will be determined by 106 holes
in two back-to-beck 54-hok tour-
naments. Eastern New Mexico will
serve as host for the first 54 holes in
April and after one day of travel
Angelo State will serve as host for the
final 54.
Competition against Division I
schools lb tournaments such as the
Baylor Invitational and the University
of Houjtori ail-American tournament
will help the Cats improve before con-
ference Jarrett said. "It gives them
better competition" he said. "In most
sports better players will bring you up
and teach you different things."
Jarrett said he was pleased with the
fall but had expected a win in the
Lone Star Conference tournament.
However that tournament may help
his team in the spring.
"I bed a feeling we should've won
that' he said. "But I think it was a
growing deal for us. It may have
tng. It showed the guys that they just
can't think they can go out there and
win it they have to go out there and
win It." f5
And a LSC championship probably"
would put ACU in the .position Jarrett
is strivlag for a trip to the national
tournament in Tampa He. in late
spring.
"What I'm really pushing for this
year' la to go to nationals" he said.
"ACU has never gone to nationals. I
just want to get a bid to go to na-
tionals and I think that would be a big
plus for the school and for the golf
i
f
helped us as far as getting prepared for
the LonetStar Conference in the spr
team."
