A crowd estimated at 500

Reich, Cubmaster. The Scout

appeared before the Board on
behalf of the Jaycee organi-
zation.
Board members also approved
the use of the Junior High
School library May 5 as a poll-
ing place for the Republican
County primary election.
Thompson explained to Board
members that since the voting
is on a Saturday and is not
a controversial political matter,
the use of the building by the
group is within the established
policies of the Board.
The use of school buildings
as emergency fallout shelters
was given an endorsement by
the Board of Education during
the meeting upon the request
of County Judge W. E. Cook,
Civil Defense co-ordinator for
Winkler County.
The request was made in con-
junction with a recent survey
of Winkler County by an engi-
neering firm hired by the Civil
Defense Agency to find and des-
ignate shelters throughout com-
munities in the entire United
States.
Supplies of food and water
will be stored in the buildings
and signs designating the build-
ings as shelters will also be
erected.
Only the male cicada is cap-
able of making a noise.

Bold Coyote
Kermit police officers are
seeking a bold coyote which
attempted to get into the
playground area at Purple
Sage School Tuesday morning.
Bill Oldham, Police Chief,
said his officers spent a num-
ber of hours searching for the
animal Tuesday but did not
catch sight of him. One officer
who did spot the animal early
in the morning was too close
to youngsters to attempt a
shot, the Chief said.
“We intend to keep a close
watch around the area es-
pecially during the times
when students are entering or
leaving the building,” he said.
“What we fear is that the
animal may be rabid. So far,
he hasn’t been seen but the
one morning, but you can
never tell.”
