Watchir/ the Athletes
We are proud of the Jackets!
They did themselves proud in
winning that District 2-AAA
title and we are confident they
will make a fine showing at the
regional contest Saturday at
Odessa.
One way to make sure they
do a good job is to be there
and see for yourself. There is
nothing which will spur on the
drive and effort of an athlete
more than the knowledge that
his hometown supporters are on
hand to give him moral sup-
port.
SPEAKING OF TRACK
Andrews made a fine showing
in |jae contest, too.
Vw comment on this not be-
cause we want to belittle the
showing of our own KHS boys,
but rather to show what the
winning habit can do.
Now Andrews has been weak
in track this year. But, they
have dominated the sport in
District 2-AAA for so many
years that from sheer habit
they came close to eclipsing
the locals.
The point of this commentary
is this ... if the desire to win
is present, it can be done. We
think KHS students now have
that all-important desire and
they will win.
A JOB WELL DONE
In the excitement and glory
of winning the track title, one
person has sort of been over-
loo^pi for a lot of the credit.
He has worked hard all this
season and for the last few
seasons.
He has shown the boys how
to it and has helped them
when they wanted it.
Ken Fannon, now in his first
year as head track coach, has
done a marvelous job and he
is to be congratulated. We are
certainly proud of him and his
boys.
LOTS MORE SPORTS
The season is young, so to
speak, and there are still plen-
ty of sporting activities for local
fans.

still the baseball team.
While the team has lost a few
games, there is still hope.
They are not out of the always-
interesting 2-AAA contest, yet.
The boys play at High School
diamond frequently.
Why not make it a point to
go out to the next game?
FREE FOOD
Seems I remember hearing
the Downtown Lions Club say
they would host at a luncheon
any team which won a district
championship. Lions, you now
have a track and volleyball
team to host. (We certainly
don’t want to forget the girls,
now.)
We hope there will be another
champion from Kermit in the
district before the end of the
school season, too. (We are
talking about baseball.)

Odessa Saturday. Pictured (from left to right) are Lar-
ry Burrows, James Russell, Pat Casey, Joe Burnett,
Marty Mayer, Phil Everett, Charles Rolf and Coach
Fannon. Missing when the picture was taken was Gary

week end, will be an alternate to the state meet ...
if the relay team qualifies. (News Staff Photo)
Kermit’s hopes for regional
and state track honors rest up-
on the talents' of seven Kermit
High School cindermen when
regional competition gets under
way at W. T. Barrett Stadium
in Odessa Saturday morning.
The KHS team, fresh from
its first District 2-AAA track
title in many, many years,
qualified one relay team and
seven individuals for the second
step in the journey to sta'te.
Coach Ken Fannon said his
440-yard relay team was among
the qualifiers and individual
performers include Gary Hob-
son, James Russell, Larry Bur-
rows, Marty Mayer, Pat Casey,
Charles. Bolf and Phil Everett.
“If the relay team -qualifies
for state- competition,’’ Coach
Fannon said, “Joe Burnett will
be entered as an alternate.”
Burnett suffered a severe
muscle injury last Saturday in
district competition. Fannon
said he will definitely be elim-
inated from any regional con-
tests this week.
“We are hoping that if the
team can qualify for state Bur-
nett will be back in shape so
that he can take his normal the 220-yard dash and the relay.
ieg in the race,” the coach
said. Larry Burrows filled in
for the ailing Burnett at dis-
trict last week and turned in a
fine performance, Fannon add-
ed.
The Kermit team which is to
compete Saturday, includes
three seniors, a junior and the
remainder are sophomores.
Burnett is also a sophomore.
Hobson established a new dis-
trict mark during the competi-
tion last week end, clearing the
pole vault bar at 13 feet, 1%
inches. The previous record was
11 feet, 11.
Kermit’s 440-yard relay team
will be composed of Burrows,
Mayer, Casey and Everett.
Also qualified for region is
James Russell, KHS high jump
sensation, and Charles Bolf, an-
other high jumper. Both are
seniors. Burrows also qualified
in the broad jump; Mayer
will enter the 440-yard dash in
addition to the relay; Casey
will take part in the 880-yard
run and relay and Everett, who
upset Andrews’ Joe Cooney last
Burrows is the third senior
on the squad and Casey is the
lone junior.
Marty Mayer, who suffered
a tendon injury the week before
district, came around well dur-
ing the week, Fannon said, and
was in good shape for the dis-
trict match. The only other
major injury on the team . is
Burnett’s, the coach explained.
“I think we have a good
chance to qualify a number of
boys for the state contest,”
Fannon said. “I know it will
help the boys and encourage
them to work harder if there
are a number of Kermit resi-
dents on hand to watch them
Saturday.
Preliminary events are sched-
uled for the morning and finals
will be -run off in the afternoon.
