By Norman Drake {
Perhaps many of you missed my j
column last week. For a brief
explanation, yours truly was in
Dallas part of last wesk assisting
some McCulloch County 4-H Club
boys exhibit their livestock at the
Dallas Fair. Five Rochelle 4-
H’ers participated In the livestock
show. They were Lewis and Bill
Bratton, Bob and Bert Bratton,
and Joey Ranne. The boys did a
fine job In representing them-
selves, McCulloch County and
their Rochelle 4-H Club.

Mary Helen Bratton, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. John Bratton of
Melvin and a Melvin 4-H Club
girl, has two fine milk-fed Here-
ford ateer* on feed for the com-
ing spring stock shows. Both
steers are showing promts#, nnd
Mary Helen is doing an excellent
Job. If you are ever by the Ford
Ranch, drop by and give Mary
I Helen a pat-on-the-back. Borne-
times n alup on the hack from a

Increase of npproxlmntely $38
per acre over compared varieties.
Incldently, the McCulloch Coun-
ty Extension Field Crops Com-
mittee plans to set up some Starr j
variety demonstrations next yonr
around Voca. Approximately 1.400
acres of peanuts are grown each

Several folks have Inquired n-
j bout difficulty in harvesting their
i pecans. The shucks stick to the
j nut# nnd fail to open. This trouble
I Is very likely being caused from
a hickory shuckwornt. This in-
i sect \ery frequently causes severe
; injury to pecans. The generations
develop In the pecan shucks As
many ns five generations may
be completed each year before
the Inst generation gee* into hl-
i berastton in the winter.
| No economical chemical con-
trol for the shuckworm has been
; developed. Plowing under deep
or burning of fallen shucks aid
In reducing population and is
relatively effective

Ranchers and farmers should

Greenbuga develop under cer-
tain conditions. Fields infested
usually show small deadened or
light brown areas caused from
the lice sucking sap from the
plant. Greenhugs reproduce rapid-
ly at temperatures between 55
and 66 degrees. Their natural
enemies, however, reproduce very
slowly when temperatures are In
this range. Thus In cool, mild
weather the greenbug may in-
crease to enormoua numbers
while Its enemies Increase very
slowly.
If infestations of greenbug ap-
pears, Parathion at the rate of
one pint per acre is most effec-
tive. Do not allow livestock to
graze within 21 daya following
treatment. For further informa-
tion contact the County Agent’s
office.

Santa Fe hauls
2.3 million bales
of western cotton
to markets
King Cotton has moved west.
In 1945, only 36% of the nation's cotton was
grown in the West. Today over 62% of it comes from
states served by Santa Fe.
This year Santa Fe will haul over 2,300,000 bales
of cotton to markets in 34,000 box cars—enough box
cars to make up a train 284 miles long.
Hauling cotton and other important crops, materi-
als and products from where they are grown or made
to where they are needed is another example of how
Santa Fe is meeting the transportation needs of a
growing America.
