KLGP music
director
i defends
x station
To (he Editor:
I nm writing in response to the
j i Opinion-page letter that appeared
f in the Dec. 2 issue of the Optimist
! concerning the music format of
KLGP ACU's on-campus radio
; station.
The writer of this letter former
; student Jenifer Lee Smith
n expressed a concern that KLOP
P was promoting anti-Christian
; morals by playing artists who "cru-
clfy (Christ) again with lyrics."
She further added that she would
j like to sec KLOP play only
! Christian Contemporary music.
I While I can appreciate the opin-
f ion Ms. Smith has that since ACU
; is a Christian school KLOP should
play Christian music her plea to
! change the format to Contcmpo-
I rary Christian music and her
j indictment of KLGP's current for-
. Ie; mat are both .extremely uniformed.
j In doing so she insinuates that
i there is some major controversy
I about KLOP's format (news to mc)
and that KLOP is something that
Christ would be ashamed of. As
Music Director this accusation is
jr deeply offensive to me.
; It should first be noted that
Jenifer Lee Smith has not attended
ACU since the spring semester of
1992. Apparently she has not kept
in very close contact with anyone
currently attending ACU as the
Jj format of the station has changed
since then.
When I took over the position of
music director of KLGP the for-
mat was changed from AOR
(album-oriented rock)to
collegealternative. With a change
in format comes a complete over-
haul of the music as well. Tlie
objections Ms. Smith may have
had to KLOP's format last year do
not even apply today. Fully 75-85
percent of the old songs have been
replaced.
& Of the several artists that Ms.
Smith mentions in her letter only
one Toad the Wet Sprocket
remains in the rotation of the
music currently played. One of its
songs that we play is a powerful
anti-rape statement. Another is
A about the fragility of God's cre-
ation and man's responsibility on
Earth. There is nothing anti-
Christian about that.
Additionally we do play several
Christian artists. Phil Kcaggy is a
S prominent Christian guitarist
while acts such as U2. Arrested
Development and Colourblind a
rap group comprised of ACU tal-
ent promote strongly Christian
ideals and values in their music
Furthermore I personally screen
every song played on KLGP to be
absolutely certain that nothing we
f
play promotes immorality or anti-
Christian sentiment.
If I have any doubt about a
song's integrity whatsoever it does
not get played. Her insinuation that
j we at KLGP are trying to weaken
V the morals of the ACU population
are completely unfounded.
While I personally have nothing
against Contemporary Christian
music there ore two strong reasons
why changing the format would
not be feasible. First of all out of
the 300 to 400 songs in rotation
roughly 95 percent come directly
from CD's in my personal collec-
tion. Contrary to popular belief
radio stations do not get much free
music. Believe mc when I say that
t KLGP's budget is very limited
and that any change in format
would be too costly.
The second reason is that there is
already a very well-equipped
Christian radio station in Abilene-
.KONZ 88.1 FM. This is true of
every other radio format as well-
country pop rock light. All of
these formats are well-represented
in Abilene already.
There is no other station in town
that plays collegealternative
music.The only reason anyone
Jktunes in to KLGP at all since it
only broadcasts on Campus Cable
(channel 9) is that it offers intelli-
gent informed quality cutting-
edge music that is not available
anywhere else in Abilene
i KLGP does not play music that
Kcrucifies Christ nor does it pro-
gram artists or songs that promote
immorality in any way shape or
form.

I am certain we agree that homo-
sexual behavior is always sinful
and must be avoided by disciples of
Jesus.
No doubt wc can agree that scrip-
ture clearly condemns such behav-
ior. However your cartoon over-simplifies
a complex social and politi-
cal problem while stereotyping an
entire segment of the population.
Whether or not one agrees with
President-elect Clinton's position
on how homosexual military per-
sonnel ought to be treated there is
no justification for such an unsym-
pathetic attack on a person who
must cope with the unique and
painful consequences of a life of
homosexual orientation. In much
the same way that inappropriate
heterosexual behavior cannot be
tolerated in the armed forces
Clinton's policy would never allow
such a scenario as your tasteless
cartoon suggests to go undisci-
plined. Sadly I continue to realize that
otherwise compassionate Christian
people react to homosexual men
and women with little or no under-
standing. Over the past twenty years as a
minister I have listened to scores of
men and women pour out their
hearts in counseling sessions about
the unique agony of homosexuality.
Just one honest open conversation
with a person whose sexual orienta-
tion is confused for whatever rea-
son will change the way one feels
about and reacts to people who
must face on a daily basis spiritual

us will never encounter in a life-
time. While the Bible regards homo-
sexual behavior as sinful a per-
son's inner sexual orientation is not
addressed in scripture except in
those instances where God's
spokesmen teach self-control holi-
ness and sexual purity.
As with hctcroscxuality any
helpful understanding of homosex-
uality must include this clear dis-
tinction between sexual orientation
on the one hand and behavior or
lust on the other. The role of a
Christian university tat least in part
is to prepare its students for com-
passionate ministry and people
helping. I fail to sec how thus state-
ment of your opinion docs anything
but further a spirit of hatred igno-
rance suspicion and fear.

Editor's note: Because of the num-
ber of letters we have received
regarding editorial cartoonist
Bobby Gombert's cartoijn about
homosexuals in the military we. are
unable to publish them all: '
We will not print any mcre letters
regarding the Issue of Gombert's
cartoon or homosexual's In the mil-
itary because we feel the debate has
been discussed in full. Wa appreci-
ate the points discussed in the let-
ters. As for letters on other subjects
we would ask that writers consider
our space limitations. The shorter
the letters are the mori; likely we
will have space for them.
