Leon Taylor Junior High's boys
basketball teams opened their
1993 season Monday night at
home against Taft.
Things got off on the wrong foot
for three of the four squads, as
they fell to the Whippets. Only
the seventh grade “A” squad was
victorious, winning 50-15.
Pony 7A 50, Taft 15
Taylor broke out to a 10-0 lead
in the first three minutes and nev-
er looked back in recording the
season-opening win.
Chris Aguilar led the charge
early, scoring eight of his 12
points in the first six minutes.
Both “A” teams played four six-
minute quarters.
The Ponies extended their lead
to 26-3 at halftime, limiting Taft
to just one free throw in the quar-
ter. Lucas Eppard had four points
in the period
Taylor outscored Taft 14-6 and
12-6 in the final two periods to
end the game. Seven Ponies
scored, with Aguilar and Eppard
each having 12 points to lead the
way. Joe Pritchard and Casey
Dohogne each scored eight while
Joel Willoughby and Justin Gear
adding four each. James Kelly
scored two to round out the

The Whippets led 8-2 after one
period and slowly built the advan-
tage to send the Ponies to the
defeat.
Taylor’s lone score of the quar-
ter came on a Davy Lyons basket.
Lyons led the team with four
points. Taft led 24-8 at halftime.
The Whippets continually stole
the ball and beat the Ponies down
the floor for easy baskets, which
allowed them to extend their lead
throughout the game.
Aardn Kombs, Daniel Keele,
Marcus Gonzales and John Rodri-
guez each contributed two points
for the Ponies.
Taft 7B 15, Ponies 1
Taylor’s lone point came in the
first half on a Roger Hummel free
throw, but despite good defense,
the Ponies still fell to defeat.
Both squads experienced first
game jitters in what for many was
their first time playing in front of a
crowd. The Whippets had four
baskets to take an 8-1 lead at half-
time.
Both *‘B” teams played two 10-
minute halves where the clock
ran almost continuously.
Taft 8B 16, Ponies 3
Once again, the Ponies were
able to mount just a single point,
this one by Dereck White. The
other two Taylor tallies came
courtesy of a Taft player shooting
the ball in the wrong basket.
The Whippets led 8-3 at half-
