Many Children
Have Double -
SS Protection
Nearly half the population of
the United States Is either under
18 or over 65.
As a country, we are actually
growing both older and younger
at the same time.
Nearly 18 million people now
living will never see their 65th
birthday again; 70 million still
l^ve to reach their 18th year.
This leaves 100 million men
and women In their peak pro-
ductive years between 18 and
65.
The composition of this .100
million is undergoing a change
caused by the advent of the
working mother, which In turn
Is, having an effect upon the .
supervlvorshlp prelection of
social security.
Children are now beginning
to have Increasing protection
through both the father and the
mother.
Now as the mother begins to
work to supplement the family
Income, the children In ,turn
are becoming dependent upon
a combination of earnings of
both parents. In effect, they
have double social security ftiro-
tectlon.
To be Insured, the worklng'-
mother needs only what lawyers
call a ' current attachment" to
the labor market. This Is de-
fined by law as 1 1/2 years of
work out of the three years
before death.
It W not too strange that many
well - Informed people forget
this. A language professor In
4, university not more than 100
miles from here lost two years
of benefits lor his two children
because he thought his children
were considered dependent only
upon*the father.
If a college professor can
make a mistake like this, don't
you agree It's better to consult
your social security office In
person when In doubt?
A representative from the
Parts, Texas District Office Is
In Clarksville each Monday
morning In the basement of the
Post Office If you wish to con-
tact him there.
One of the few things you can
get without working is hungry.

Between discovery of a new drug In a laboratory
the time needed to prove safety and benefits Is
over five years. Reliable statistics show that only
one new drug Is useful for every 2500 substances
studied. Four million dollars, the average cost of
developing each drug discovery, Is a lot of money.
But, new drugs are greatly responsible for the fact
that since 1937 the death rate has so greatly de-
creased. Countless millions living today would be
dead If the 1937 death rate had continued. A useful
new drug Is always a blessing.
