God set forth the law of cause and effect. Hebrews 3:4 "For every house is builded by
some man; but he that built all things is God" makes this truth manifest. God takes natural
law, explains this truth, and then applies it spiritually to salvation
There aro joining causes in God's plan that effect our salvation. God is the first cause of
owr redemption. He willed it, purposed it, decreed it, and executed it. “All things are of (Tod
who hath reconciled us unto himself by Jesus Christ." II Corinthians 5:18. Titus 2:14 tells
on Christ la the second cause of our salvation, “who gave hftnself for. us, that he may
redeem ns from all iniquity.” He is the sacrifice of our salvation. The purchase price of our
salvation is the third cause - the blood of Christ, f Peter 1:18,19 “Forasmuch as ye know
that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of
Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: The Holy Spirit is the revealing
cause. God purposed and Christ purposed, but it was necessary that it be revealed to man.
I Peter 1 :I2 “Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themaelves, but unto us they did
■ilftfster the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the
I unto you with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven; which things the angels
to hmb Into." Fifthly, the gospel is the instrumental cause of salvation. The gospel is
thoVehlchle of conveyance of salvation to man. I Corinthians 15:1,2 “moreover, brethren, I
declare unto vou the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and
wherein ye alandi By which also yc are saved, if ye keep In memory what I preached unto
you, unless ye have believed in vain." The apporpriating cause of salvation is faith. Romans
5:1,2 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our l/ord Jesus
Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice
fa hope of the glory of God." Seventhly, baptism is the consumating cause of salvation, the
art la which faith obeys and primary obedience is completed - Romans 6:3-5 “Know ye not,
that so may of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Therefore We are buried with him bv baptism into death: that Hke as Christ was raised up
from the (lewd by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of Ufe.
Far If we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, wc shall be also in the
likeanm «f his resurrectiwa " In the eight place, hope is the sustaining cause of our
salvation, ksr salvation is a continuing state (or the saved, the final attainment of which
depends upon continuing faith and obedience. I Peter 1:13 “Wherefore gird up
the Mas of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that Is to be brought unto
Vou at the revelation of Jesus Christ;" The "grace" which shall be brought at the
"revelation" or coming of Christ is salvation in heaven, the ultimate goal of life, which if we
should miss would have been better if we never lived.
The law of c a sat km decrees that every effect must have an adequate cause. Salvation
is an effect in the soul and the divine law of causation operates in the plan which the grace
of God has designed to save sinners. Men cannot reject it and he saved
The disobedient shall be damned.
Mark 18:10 “He that belleveth and _ _ _ _
fa baptized shall be saved; but he I |

Panl Ussery Notes Anniversary
As Dallas Sunday School Teacher
Sunday, May 19, marked
Paul Usaery’s 30th anniversary
as teacher of the Berean Sun
day school class of the Park Cit
ies Baptist Church of Dallas.
Hia accomplishments in this en
deavor prompted an interview
by Weldon Owens of The Dallas
Times Herald and Owens has
consented to allowing The
Times to reprint the feature in
its entirety.
Paul Ussery is a name that
would challenge that of John
the Baptist in the Dallas area as
a Baptist Bible teaching
wonder.
The lanky bespectacled
man whose boyhood was spent
in Clarksville is a spellbinder
every Sunday a.m. at Pastor
Herbert R Howard's Park
Cities Baptist Church. While
describing feats and records of
EUssery, you're apt to wear out
words such as amazing and
fantastic.
The third Sunday in May of
1974 will mark his 30th year as
a teacher of the Berean lass, a
large group of prominent Dallas
men whoise early presidents
have included Sam White (the
first), Harry W. Smith, Frank
Griffies, Nick Lowe, Will I.
Cloe, fred N. 'Peek, Henry
oodman, Mallory Collins, Alf M.
Pendleton and C.F. (Jinx)
Weekley.
"I recall that when I first
attended after moving to
Dallas." Ussery reflected, "We
were in a garage on Lovers
Lane, with saydust on the
ground and maybe 30 members
attending.
"There weren't many more
than 300 members of the church
then, and now the enrollment
passes 5,000," he added.
I was invited by Pinkie
Denman to hear this masterful
dedicated perfectionist.
More than 100 men were so
engrossed during his 25 minute
sacred disquisition that you
could have heard a page drop.
And for more than 1.500
consecutive Sundays. Ussery
has used exactly 20 pages of
triple spaced material for each
— all pregnant with laborious
research and sprinkled with
humor.
Futhermore. he has every-
one of these brilliant summar
ies filed on chronological order,
each of which he has spent an
average of five hours complet
mg. They cover almost every
beatutude of Christianity,
regardless of pain or joy, from
witnessing for the Lord to
wearing of the fig leaf.
Ussery has a velvet voice
with sincere resonance, and it is
a champoin product that began
when he was invited to make a
speech in South Texas, he was
only 17, but the state hardware
convention people did not know
his age. W'ith his inborn tact, he
put together his experiences as
advertising manager for mar
able Hardware in (Tarsville and
memorized it so well that he
was instant success. Natural
leadership will out, and he was
the youngest Worshipful Mas
ter Iso headlined) of the
Masonic Lodge at age 26 after
he had been named as Sunday
School superintendent at lin-
age of 17. (He will receive his
50 year Masonic pin in 1974,
and DeMolay did a lot for that
before he ever was initiated.)
He was born northwest of
Tyler where the Joseph Lane
Ussery family got mail through
Lindale. There were - short
times in Madill, Okla.. and
other areas for tenant farmers
until they came to Clarksvile,
where Papa carpentered.
Ussery is a dropout. "I quit
my first year in high school to
help my mother and dad get
by,” he recalled. “I went to
work in the bakery for S. M

Cartwright greasing pans,
making dough and all After I
got up to $12.50 a week, that's
when the hardware store
offered me $15.
"The bakery offered me
$20, when they heard I was’
quitting, but I stayed, and it
was an experience,” he
continued.
K.F. Marable was a great
generous man," he said "I'll
never forget. His sons had come
back from war and he had been
paying them $125 a month and
I was up to $80. He called me
back where the cross cut saws
were hanging, and said, Sonny,
I've been paying my boys more
than you. So I'm equalizing it
back from the first of the year
and you've got the difference
$540 coming It was the lirst
time my mother ever had a set
of matched dishes not
expensive, but I bought a set all
alike," he added.
The sweet sauce of labor
began to bless after he came to
Dallas. With Fidelity Union
Life Insurance Company, he
zoomed into agency vice
presidency and finally his own
agency, officed at Highland
Park.
Recalling some of his early
days, he said that a Chevrolet
dealership in Clarksville closed
