Speed Reading
Course at PJC
^Reading for, Speed and
Comprehension, an eight week
course emphasizing reading
speed and increased compre
hension, will be taught by Mrs.
Johnny F. McDaniel, a reading
specialist, beginning Tuesday,
June 4, at Paris Junior College.
Mrs. McDaniel, instructor with
the PJC Learning Skills
Center, will teach the course
from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and
Thursdays for four weeks in the
Administration Building.
Fee for the course is $25.00
including all books.
In the course, Mrs.
McDaniel will introduce various
techniques helpful in increasing
one’s reading rate and
comprehension. She will dis
cuss skimming and scanning —
a fast way to find major themes
and ideas without reading
every single word. Other
techniques to be presented will
be distinguishing different
flexibility rates, developing
proper eye span movements,
and paragraph comprehension.
Students will use pacing
machines, phrase flashers,
reading kits, tapes and films in
the classes. Throughout the
course, timed exercises will be
given so that students may
check their individual progress.
The course will be
especially helpful to executives^
teachers, salesjftfn, an<f others
who read daily. Mrs. McDaniel
holds a M.Ed. degree as a
reading specialist from South
ern Methodist University. She
taught the spevif. reading BURN IT OR BURY IT.
course last fall.
Heading for Speed and
Comprehension is sponsored by
the PJC Continuing Education
office. 784 6601. extension 51.
A couple of years ago,
when the environment was nt
the forefront of public atten
tion, the solid waste problem
was a major concern. There
seemed to be only two ways to
deal with the ton of trash that
every American produces in a
year’s time either burn it, or
bury it.
Going into the Homestretch of this election, 1 wish to
express my thanks to each one that gave me your vote. T<
you that voted for neither of us in the Primary, I earnestly
ask for your support in the Runoff, June 1.
I will show my appreciation by doing,my duty to every
citizen in our precinct ahd to every eompiunity.
There are county taxes to be wisely and justly spent
that every person in our precinct shall be benefit ted
thereby.
Again, I earnestly solicit your vote.
