;vcn a little too much iron in
men's diets could increase their
'risk of contracting cancer A new
study suggests iron is an essential
nutrient found mainly in red meat
and fortified grains. Too little can
cause medical problems from anc-
jmia to retardation. But the new
research indicates supplementing
diets with iron whether in pills or
fortified foods may not be in
everyone's best interest. The largest
study to date in the International
Journal of Cancer shows a risk of
a variety of cancers from colon to
liver beginning to rise When the
amount of iron in men's bodies is
10 percent higher than average.
"There is such as thing as too
much of a good thing" said study
author Dr. Marc Micozzi director
of the National Museum of Health
and Medicine in Washington.

Pneumonia perpetuates $
death knell for humanity
By Liz DoupSandra Jacobs
Chicago Sun Times 1994
It feels like the flu your body
aches the cough persists A fever
soars but the symptoms this time
spell pneumonia which left untreat-
ed or treated too late can kilt swift-
ly. Its victims include the old chil-
dren and people with diabetes or
diseases that impair their immune-
systems. Veteran Miami Herald movie
critic Bill Cosford a diabetic whose
sudden death at 47 shocked his
readers and colleagues thought he
had a cold one recent Monday. By
Tuesday night he had to be hospi-
talized and by early Thursday
morning his diabetes and pneumo-
nia joined forces to take his life.
Combined with influenza pneu-
monia ranks as the country's sixth
leading cause of death.
Most people remember the sud-den-dcath-from-pneumonia
head-
lines when Mupjpct creator Jim
Hcnson died unexpectedly at 53 in
1990. Hcnson had flu-like symp-
toms and delayed treatment news
stories reported. That same year
Elizabeth Taylor became seriously
ill with an unfamiliar strain of
pneumonia.
"Wc do have a cavalier attitude
sometimes both doctors and people
in general" said Dr. Ebcn Rubin
associate director of the intensive
care unit at Jackson Memorial Hos-
pital in Miami. "WSrc used to
treating pneumonia and having peo-
ple survive. But sometimes they
don't particularly if they have
other illnesses."
With pneumonia a lung infec-
tion the air sacs fill with pus and
other liquid and oxygen has trouble
reaching the blood. If the body's
cells don't receive enough oxygen
they cannot work well. g
In the worst cases the lung infes
tion can spread through the blowj."
stream to different organs causing
heart and kidney failure. By ttrcf
time Hcnson was hospitalized doc-
tors diagnosed the infection hpd
progressed for at least three days
Large doses of antibiotics did not
help. Hcnson died less than 24.
hours after being hospitalized.
Pneumonia is a medical condition
which occurs from any number pt
contributing factors. Bacterial anil
viral Infections such as influenza
cause pneumonia. Type A-Beiji
influenza has precipitated many;
cases of pneumonia this year. Othcrj
causes arc mycoplasmas which arje
hard-to-classify agents bearing
characteristics of bacteria virusqjC
and fungi gases and dust.
Pneumonia usually can be treated
successfully with antibiotics'!
detected early. People should con
suit doctors if they have shortness
of breath and chest pain and cough
up greenish mucus said Dr. Glenn"!
Singer associate director of puK
tnonology at Broward General
Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
Chronically ill individuals constl
lute a high risk group who are more'
vulnerable and need to consult "a"
doctor sooner. The combination of
pneumonia and diabetes together
for instance can initiate a vicious;
cycle said Dr. Jay Skylcr endocri-
nologist and specialist in diabetes at
the University of Miami Medical
School. "The presence of pncumo
nia makes the diabetes worse. Andi
diabetes makes it more difficult to.
fight pneumonia. For that reason
during flu season we pay particular
attention to colds and flus in diabcK
ics" Skylcr said. -J

senior interdisciplinary studies major from Den-
ver objected to the stipulation that Senate mem-
bers be excluded from receiving the SA scholar-
ship for the trip.
However Allrcd said giving the scholarship to
a Senate member would allow the Senate to
award funds to itself.
The donation will leave $2800 in the unallo-
cated fund Allrcd said.

ers Committee co-chairman Sladc Sullivan
