By Judge WILLIAM CUSHING WAIT of the Superior Court of M*»«echu»ett».
S for contributory reasons for divorce I might mention tho
elaborate, not to say elaborated, stories published in the
newspapers regarding enormous sums of money paid for
alimony.
Without passing criticism, but simply staling what I think to bo
obvious conditions, I may say that I think that such a liberal alimony
is an INCENTIVE TO SEEK DIVORCE. If the courts were
LESS LIBERAL in the awarding of alimony it might be that some
of these persons born in poverty and raised to wealth by reason of
marriage might not bo so anxious to sever the tie that bound them to
tho one from whom they received an income.
GRANTING THAT AVARICE MAY LEAD SOME PERSON8 TO
MARRY ANOTHER OF THE OPPOSITE SEX BECAUSE OF MONEY
AND LUXURY, THE ATTITUDE OF SOME OF OUR COURTS IN
GRANTING AN EXTRAVAGANT ALIMONY SEEMS TO PUT A PRE-
MIUM ON DIVORCE FOR SUCH AVARICIOUS PERSONS.
Personally I bcliovo in moderate alimony, but only in certain
cases, comparatively few in number. I don’t believe, for instance, in
a young and ablobodicd woman with any business experience—or
business ability—taking money from a man she no longer cares for
simply becauso ho was onco her husband and because it is EASIER
THAN WORKING FOR HERSELF. Pride should step in, and if
she won’t live with him slio SHOULDN’T BE WILLING TO AC-
CEPT MONEY FROM IIIM. It doesn’t seem to me to bo square or
sturdy or American.

ON'T BE AFRAID OF WORK.
A man and especially a young man must l>o WILLING
TO START AT TTIK BOTTOM. Many u fellow lias lost a
chance to work because bo lias shown to a prospective em-
ployer that he is UNWILLING TO DO WORK WHICH HE CON-
SIDERS BENEATH HIM.
i A man who is seeking a job should bo willing to do any kind of
J bonornblo and honest work nt tho start.
When a man is seeking employment ho must not, become discour-
l aged if ho fails at first. Tho want advertisement in newspapers will
i always give him clows ns to where to seek.
If ho seeks nt it long enough lie is almost sure to get work if he
' can eonvinco a prospective employer that ho really wants to “mako
! good” and is NOT LOOKING FOR A “SNAP."
To keep a position n man should be industrious and lioneat. llo
should be willing and oven glad to WORK OVERTIME WHEN
NECESSARY. No one wants a CLOCK WATCHER.
IT 8EEM8 TO ME THAT ONE OF THE BEST WAYS NOT ONLY
TO KEEP A JOB, BUT TO GAIN PROMOTION, IS FOR A MAN TO
TAKE A REAL INTEREST IN HIS EMPLOYER’S BUSINESS. IF HE
DOES THIS HE WILL FIND THAT THE WORK WILL NOT BE
DRUDGERY AND HE WILL BECOME INVALUABLE TO HIS EM
PLOYER. _
