?ar friends I urge you as
'aliens and strangers in the
world to abstain from sinful
desires which war against your
souUJLlve such good lives among
the pdgans that though they accuse
you of doing wrong they may see
your good deeds and glorify God."
; Peter 2:1 7-2.
Charles Gumn graduate missions
major from Mbarara Uganda has a
vision for an on-campus ministry
that will encourage students to live
more closely to Peter's exhortation.
Gumn said he is concerned about
attitudes he has seen on campus that
do not reflect Christ. He wants his
ministry to create an awareness in
students of their responsibilities as
Christian witnesses
"ACU is an international commu-
nity and wc need to develop a cul-
ture of love" Guma said. Much can
be done to facilitate a more consis-
tent atmosphere of love on campus
and the efforts need to begin in stu-
dents everyday lives in the dormi-
IVt need to develop
a culture of love
Charles Guma
torles in the library in social clubs
and in Daily Assembly he said.
Guma said he has seen "efforts by
many people who help and encour-
age one another in the Uord" but he
has "not really observed the spirit of
Christ as much in areas like the
cafeteria. Sometimes when people
arc in a group having fun they tend
to forget to be examples of Christ."
He refened to such incidents as stu-
dents damaging cafeteria flatware.
Matt Anders assistant manager
of the Bean said he docs not sec
these types of incidents as a major
concern. "We do have people mak-
ing rings out of silverware but wc
serve 2000 to 2500 people a day
and 1 would say students who arc
doing those things arc in the minori-
ty" he said.
Guma said he considers the atti-
tudes that lead to those actions as
potentially damaging students'
Christian witnesses to employers
and surrounding community mem-
bers who might not be Christians.
He considers his daily life as that
of a missionary. "Being a mission-
ary docs not necessarily mean serv-
ing on a field for away" he said.
Guma said "I am calling upon
every Christian to sec himself as a
disciple." He also said students
should consider "what happiness!
as a Christian. If people arc seeking
happiness in worldly things thc
will lose their focus on Christ."
Dr. Gallyn Van Rhccncn associ-
ate professor of Bible compared
Guma's desired mission to James!
Thompson's call to Christians in hit
book The Church In Exile to live
lives that arc "God's countcr-culifi
turc in a non-Christian woild." '
Guma said he has talked with
other students who shared his con-
ccrn and added he hopes students;
who desire to commit to the min-
istry will contact him. -!
"People will be led by die Spirit.
he said. "It is the individual respond
sibility of every Christian to devel-
op a consistent example of Christ in
his life."

Researchers find northeast Texas county prone to cancer
By Laura Bell
Dallas Morning News 1994
new study has reported that the population of
M"itus County in northeast Texas 90 miles
cast of Dallas may suffer disproportionately
from certain cancers.
After examining all cancer cases for eight
years scientists found a highcr-than-cxpcctcd
number of people with leukemia and multiple
myeloma two cancers that originate in the bone
marrow. The overall rate of cancer was normal.
The researchers say they cannot explain the
results. "There is an excess of cancer and there
are possible risk factors in the area but that
doesn't mean wc can say the increase is due to
this particular exposure" said Sara Strom epi-
demiologist at University of Texas M.D. Ander-
son Cancer Center in Houston who led the study.
Strom found 46 cases of leukemia in Titus
County between 1977 and 1984. Eighteen cases
would have been the normal rate given the pop-
ulation of the county. She also found 14 cases of
multiple myeloma eight more than would have
been expected.
"The increased rate could not have happened
by chance" Slrom said Thursday. Her study
appears in the February issue of The Journal of
Texas Medicine which is published by the
Texas Medical Association.
Strom began the study after county residents
voiced concern about local cancer rates.
She and her colleagues examined records from
the Texas Cancer Registry hospital records and
death certificates. The statistics were adjusted to
account for the age of county residents.
Although the report docs not point out any spbr
cific cause it notes "the excess cancers ... may
be relevant to the ongoing debate on the health
effects of the disposal of combustion wastes
from mining and fossil fuel and on the need for
stricter regulations." It also mentions petrochem-
ical and other industries in the area.
"Wc should study more counties in the lignite
mining areas" Strom said.
