An Event of
In the week of August 23, 1874
appeared the following Item:
“Red River County Bank or-
ganized this week by electing
R. R. Gaines, president; R. J.
Lee, vice presideht; T. H. Young
cashier; A. P. Dick, secretary.
The Mirectors art as follows:
W. L. Nunnley, J. J. Slvlay,
J. T. Fleming, Geojrge C. Bak-
er, John Allison, A. P. Dick,
R. J. Lee, R. R. Gaines and
Thomas H. Young.
“This Is a home Institution,
organized and put on foot by
citizens In our midst. The want
of auch an organization has long
been felt, by both merchants and
farmers. Last fall and winter,
•our town suffered much, com-
mercially, from want of bank-
ing facilities. Cotton would go
to other places, because at
times It was extremely Incon-
venient for our merchants to
make advances on It. Now, there
will be no necessity for this.
The members of this banking
corporation era business men,
and they will act together to
retain trade at Clarksville, and
for her best Interests."
The Red River County Bank
became the Red River National
Bank. Ninetieth anniversary of
corporate organization comes
at a time when constructs of
a new and modern home for this
Institution is well advanced. Al-
though organized the last week
of August, all legal require-
ments were not completed until
November, when one of the first
banks In Northeast Texas open-
ed Its doors. It Is hoped by all
who are connected with the Red
River National as well as the
public that the 90th_annlYersary
at formal opening may be cele-
brated In the new building.
Media Choice
Unexplained
Texans vote November on
three amendments to the State
Constitution. The law requires
the Secretary of State to publish
official notices In each county
of the provisions of these pro-
posed changes. Only once In the
last half dozen years or more
has one of these notices appear-
ed In The Times, a 90-year-
old Institution which somehow
the secretary qf state overlooks
In Ms choice of media or else
uses a list of publications fur-
nished for this purpose. Two
years ago the matter was taken
up with Senator A M. Atkin and
Representative Mack Edwards.
They acted promptly In calling
attention to the oversight, but
no satisfactory explanation of
why The Times has been omitt-
ed from the list was received.
This year The Times Is again
Ignored.
If the objective In publishing
onstltutlonal amendments Is to
