Well it looks like the world
scries is moie or less set between
the New Yolk Yankees and the
Philadelphia Phillies. At this
writing the Yanks hold a li't
game margin over the Detioit Ti-
gers and need two victones or
two Detroit losses to cinch then
hold on the junior circuit's bunt-
ing. The Boston Red Sox who
staged brilliant pennant chive in
August falteied in the stietch (as
usual) and are hoplessly out.
The Phillies need only one
game for a death grip on the Na-
tional League title and appear a
shoo-in for the championship.
However if the Phillies continue
to falter as they have and lose the
lemaining four games and the
Brooklyn Dodgers win their fi-
nal six games it would necessi-
tate a play-off between the two
clubs.
The Yankees have four individ-

MEET THE
JACKETS
Needing no Introduction . . .
Jackie Bearrow big six-footer
two-hunched pound right half-
back hails from Olney Texas.
Gi (Hunting from Olney High
wheie he played under Coach
ilmton Jackie was quite an all-
louna athlete. While attending
high school Beanow won four
letteis in both football and basket
ball. In his senior year (1947) he
was selected on the all-district
team.
A Per completing his secondary
raining Jackie enrolled at Bay-
lo I'n veisity wheie he was a
startei and spaik-plug of the
Bayioi fieshman team. Not being
completely satisfied there he
completed his first semester and
then transfeied to Howaid Panye.
This caused a lot of heartache to
Coach Woodiuff then head coach
at Bayioi. Woodrufl was planning
o bail i his team aiound Beanow
.he following season
Kcn though hampeied by var-
ious aiiments last season Jackie
have Double from acioss the wat-
eis. On the gild fiopt it's a little
eailv to be making tnsh state-
menu but it appears that Notio
Dame Oklahoma and Aimy will
apear with their usual an ay of
talent. UCLA has a fine team out
west and may merit national rec-
ognition befoie it's all over
In the Southwest confeience
'' the same old stoiy and ques-
tion Who''. All the teams have
he same well uiunded attack as
always Texas who was a pru--e
ison fa voi lie looked bad again-
st an mspned Texas Tech eleven
and baiely got by Eel Morgan's
chaiges 2H-14. Tech was superior
in eveiy dcpaitment but the one
that counts touchdowns.
Killer Kyle Hote gave the
spoi ts world cause for his being u
ciystal ball all-American by lead-
ing the SMU Mustangs to a 33-13
victory over Georgia Tech. Rote
made two touchdowns one on n
75 yaul jaunt and passed for two
otheis in the tout of the Ram-
blin' Wieck.
TCU showed a well rounded 11
as they slipped past a formidable
Kansas ciew 14-7. Texas A & M
ran all over Nevada 48-18 with
Glenn Lippman showing the way.
Considering past seasons wheie
thev suffeied several upsets and
had moie than their shaie of bad
breaks I figuie Texas is duo
again this year for glory with
SMU. Rice and possibly TCU
figunng stiong in the tace. It's
mv guess though that no team
will have a clean slate.
Well that's all the loom allot-
ed to me but I'll be back and gab
a little moie next week. See Ya.

showed up all through the season.
He has already shown his skill
this fall especially in the game
with La. Tech. A powerful run-
ner Jackie stands out as a fancy
stepper when the occasion pre-
sents itself.
Beat row is one of the peisonal-
i"'s of the campus also. He in-
tends to enter the coaching field
when he gets his degree. His ma-
jor is physical education. A swell
fellow and a gieat ball player
Our next athletic personality
is none other than Leioy Coppic
about the shiftiest lunner around
these parts. Leroy is another one
of the local boys on the HPC
squad. He graduated fiom Brown-
wood High in 1940. During his
stay theie he letteied three yeais
in football and became one of the
most lespected players in th dis-
li ict. He was also an outstanding
iiack man in his high school days.
After graduating Coppic spent a
year and a half in the army then
moved on to football fame In IIPC.
Leioy played noticable ball his
fieshman year until he suffeied a
knee injuiy about mid-season
that kept him out the lest of the
year. In 1948 Leroy leceived his
"H" and showed local grid fans
his talents as an outstanding
backfield man. Like Stewait
Coppic is small yet he has the
power to blast through the big-
gest of lines.
Coppic's most outstanding tun-
ning featuie is his ability to leave
opposing tacklers hanging in the
air. Running with high knee ac-
tion he has spun out of tackler's
arms time after time. This par-
ticular action enables him to move
swiftly from side to side and
elude mapy n bedazzled foe. Le-
u;y never gives tip until he has
hit the ground and fight liko that
has made him the player that he
is today in every game you sue
him play.
Coppic is a good-natuied guy
With a cheery "hello" for eveiy-
