him an "Idiot savant — a riddle
and a challenge to science.”
Science may find a riddle in this
troubadour of brush and oil, who
begs for food and sleeps in rail-
road stations, but art has found in
him the answer to its constant
search for a painter with popular
appeal.
Cover Pictures
When an exhibition of his paint-
ings was shown recently in a Kobe
department store, 200,000 Yamashi-
ta fans flocked to the gallery, set-
ting off a near riot.
Japan's top magazines vie for
tiis work for cover pictures. A
theater in Osaka had one of his
paintings woven into a huge cur-
tain at a cost of $28,000, quite a
price in Japan.
A portfolio of full-color reproduc-
tions of his best known works, se*
lecteJ by Dr. Shikiba, his guardian
and protector, and published by
Kurihara-Shobo of Tokyo, is a po-
pular seller.
At the request of Yamashita’s
mother, 10 per cent of the sale
profits from his originals and the
portfolio go to a fund for educat-
ing mentally deficient children in
Japan. The rest goes to him and
his mother.
Yamashita was born in a Tokyo
slum, son of an alcoholic father
and a normal, hard working mo-
Estimate Women
Voters This Year
At 35 Million
Washington — II is estimated
that 35 million women, three mil-
lion more than in 1952, will vote in
this year’s presidential elections.
Top politics of both Democratic
and Republican parties are count-
ing on the women to put over their
own standard hearers.
Throughout.....tlig nation, in rural
as • well as urban areas, women
are being stirred iu active partici-
pation in tile political arena as
vote-getters and fund-raisers.
at a relief association. The boy
was taken to a special school lor
mentally retarded children.
At the new school, Yamashita
started tearing up colored paper
and pasting tire bits on canvas, a
Japanese art form called "hari-e."
The pictures he made by tills
ancient method astounded teach-
ers, then artists. In 1936, the late
Sotaro 5'asu, then top painter of
Japan, said: "This boy is posses-
sed of a mysterious talent. But 1
fear it may not develop as ill the
case of more normal prodigies."
Yasui's faar was not warranted.
Yamashita’s talent kept develop-
ing .without letup, lie experimen-
ted viitli oils — without using a
brusn —by daubing directly from
the tube onto the canvas. Later,
lie piogrcssed to using a brush
and demonstrated amazing talent.
Roams Countryside
Ni w 34, Yamashita, is a startling
sight to see. He seldom dresses pro-
perly, sometimes refusing to wear
pants, even when he ventures onto
tile street.
Most of the time he roams the
country-side, begs food and produc-
es pictures for anyone who is kind
to him. He takes no interest in

The Democrats have been very
successful with their "Read and !
Sew " get-togethers — a combina- |
tion fund-raising and educational
activity - especially in small
towns.
The Democrats do not boast a
separate national women's organi- ;
zation, in the expressed belief
tiiat men and women arc more
effective working in unity.
About 14 states have women's
Democratic clubs, however, such
as tin* Women's National Democra-
tic Club of tiic DU.trict of Colum-
bia which raised thousands with
its hilarious skit "Jenny for Presi-
dent," which will be repeated in
Chicago during the national con-1
vcntion. Also effective is its Con-
gressional Wives Forum, made up
of about 45 wives of tojv Democra-
tic lawmakers, many of whom
have been giving on speaking tours
throughout live country.
