Basketball got'Into full swing
at Rivercrest High School as the
varsity boys team onened the
season against Hughes Springs
Thursday and met James Bow-
ie Saturday night. They played
Clarksville at Clarksville
Tuesday of this week.
The Rebels were second place
winners In District 15-AA last
year. Three starters are re-
turning from that team backed
toy 12 others including two sen-
iors, three juniors and seven
sophomores.
The three retunvlng starters
are Lawrence Norman, ,Troy
Brown and Cecil Galloway. Top-
ping the list of contenders for
other starting spots are Rickey
Franklin and Cecil Smith. Rlv'-
er< rest boys finished the 1969-
70 year with a 20-9 season rec-
ord and 9-3 district record.
Still playing In District 15-
AA they’ll meet Commerce,
North Lamar, Cooper, Mount
Vernon and Winnsboro In con-
ference matches.
Boys coaches are Wake Wood,
Bobby Dobbs and Dick Frier-
son.
Girls Basketball
The Rebelettes, who have
gone to the state finals at Austin
for five consecutive ygprs and
won the State A A Championship
In 1967-68, opened the season
November 19. They have a per-
fect record of 4-0 this year.
Rebelette coaches are Larry
Tucker and Mrs. Billie Plrtle.

Riviere rest’s Rebels lost
their opening game of the
1.. season to Hughes Springs 90-
63 last Friday night but bourn ed

They opened the season at
home and traveled to Sims for
their second game. 1
Lawrence Norman led the
Rebels against Hughes Springs
with 29 points on 13 field goals
and 3 free points. Troy Brown'
had 16 points, Cecil Galloway
8 and Roy Rogers 6.
Allen and Lyn Royal had 16
each for Hughes Springs, Earl
Royal 12, Holloman 20 and Dean
19.
At James Bowie the Rebels
took a 19-6 lead In the first
period, were ahead 41-17 at the
half and 50-21 at the end of
the third quarter.
Lawrence Norman had C field
goals and 10 free points for 22
points; Troy Brown, 6 field
goals and 7 free shots for 19;
Cecil Qalloway 2 goals and 3
free shorts for 7; Rickey Frank-
lin, 2 field goals and 2 free
for 7 points and Roy Rogers,
2 field goals and 2 free for 6.
The Rebels had a good night
on free throws hitting 76 per
cent.

Rebelettes Win
Two Last Week
The Rivercrest Rebelettes
won their third game by beating
Leonard last Thursday night
and made It four In a row at
Colbert, Oklahoma, Saturday
night.
The varsity girls won 54-26
over Leonard and the B team
won 54-31.
Rosemary brown scored 22
points for the winners, Marla
Pittman 15 and Linda Mont-
gomery 16.
In the B game Amelia Bolin
had 17 and Donna Ward 14.
In a road game at Colbert,
Oklahoma, the A team kept Its
perfect record by winning 75-
54 after the B team dropped the
opener.
The Rebelettes took an early
lead and were ahead 23-13 at
the end of the first period and
42-28 at halftime. Score at
the end of the third quarter
was 71-54.
Marla Pittman led the scoring
with 27, Rosemary Brown had
17, Freida Whitten 15 and Jerri
Gage 12. Linda Montgomery
was top rebounder with 12.
Wlnbush was high for Colbert
with 28.

The Avery Bulldogs lost to
Prairieland Friday night 82-55
bill redeemed themselves In the
return engagement Monday
night at Pr.alrleland C8-47. They
took another win Tuesday night
at Sulphur Bluff 65-46. <
The girls didn’t fare so well
losing all three games to the
same opponents. They lost to
Prairieland 56-29 Friday, 58-
30 Monday and to Sulphur Bluff
47-27.
Friday night’s leading scor-
ers were Judy Keeling with 18
points for Avery and Debbie
Choate 18 and Betty Glover 17
for Prairieland. Billy Huff was
high scorer for the boys with 15
and Jerry Boze had 14. Jack
Whitley got IT for the winners.

again Monday night with 16 and
for Prairieland Connie Mc-
Knlght had 17 and Ann Norman
15. Billy Huff and Jerry Boze,
