learn that two Americans won

It was a sad thing to learn
that a small band ol Swiss
monks at the "highest church
in the world" (8.0(H) leet in the
Alps) is closing the kennel.
Por the first time in some
4(M) years. the no longer will

ed in more than 2.000 lives

The Monastery of the

sands of people since the tenth
century everyone from local
hunters to Napoleon....
They started breeding
burly canines naming them in
honor of their patron saint. In
those days there were no skis
and the big dogs were called on
to make paths to the victims.
Big enough to climb with
ease they could smell victims
buried deep in the snow as
well as hear avalanches long
before humans.
Upon reaching the vic-
tims they instinctively lay on
top of them licking to provide
warmth.
Now we know the origin
of the hillbillies' claims of
just "pulling up another dog"
to stay warm. (And no they
never carried small barrels of
brandy to revive the climb-
ers. Nineteenth century artists
added this picturesque touch.)

Dogs can teach us much
about smell and now in a few
sniffs can identify diseases.

Idlings II: They're talk-
ing about a 1 2-ycar-old Seattle

final at-bat prior to retirement.
Knowing that Mount St.
Helens was bubbling a few
miles away he thought how
neat it would be if the 17-ycar
Mariner veteran could smack a
home run at the very time of a
massive volcanic eruption.
Alas neither occurred;
Martinez grounded into a
double play and the volcano
continued to bubble. Still he
received a prolonged standing
ovation from devoted fans....

Idlings III: Scientists
now believe that chipmunks
"toughed it out" during the last
ice age instead of migrating
south some 5.0(H) years ago.
Now I better understand
the strange sounds produced
by Alvin Simon and Theodore
whose "Chipmonk Song" was
number one on the 1958 hit
parade.
I thought they were sim-
ply recorded at a faster speed.
Upon further review
maybe they were just shiver-
ing like snowbound victims
high in the Alps hoping that
St. Bernards soon would
appear....

Support of athletics
critical to school spirit
The Yellow Jacket staff has noticed in-
creasingly smaller crowd sizes at recent athletic
events.
We believe the entire HPU family
administration students faculty and staff
should make every effort to attend sporting
activities as they are often the first indicator of
our school's spirit.
We understand that this time of the year
presents challenges in balancing time between
scholastic and social obligations. The burden is
often on the individual to "make time" to at-
tend these events. Often attending an "extra"
event during an already busy week seems like
one more way to tip the time scales against our
favor.
That stated we believe that an over-
whelming majority of HPU family members
support our teams and wish them success with
every competition.
However it is frustrating to cover recent
events and perceive a slight lack of enthusiasm
from the crowd. In coversations with numerous
athletes from several sports that flagging enthu-
siasm from the crowd can be felt.
We believe that our athletes are giving
their all during their competitions. We believe
that we as the HPU family should give our all
in support of their efforts.
Be early. Stay late. If each of us makes an
effort to attend these events and demonstrate our
appreciation of our fellow Yellow Jackets we
will take a significant step toward continuing to
build stronger school spirit.
