Another foreign product has taken the
United States by storm the last six months.
Culture Club with lead singer Boy George
already has a No. 1 single from its debut LP
Kissing To Be Clever and the rest of the
album promises several more.
All of the cuts on this release by Virgin
Records feature lead vocalist Boy George a
former makeup designer for the London
Theatre. Boy George wears a lot of makeup on
and off stage and sports a long female-type
hairstyle and a wild unisex wardrobe. The
first time I saw Culture Club perform I wasn't
quite sure what the lead vocalist was. But
later I found out "Boy" was the prefix and I
was thankful for the clarification.
"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" was a
chart-topper and I was skeptical as to
whether or not Culture Club was just a one-
song band. But iust two weeks ago the group
released the single "Time. (Clock of the
Heart)" and I was a believer.
Overall the LP is very upbeat yet not
disurbing to listen to. Culture Club wrote and
performed every cut on the Kissing To Be
Clever LP.

Boy George docs nothing but sing on the
album but his voice is used very effectively.
The LP has several rock tunes but Boy
George shines best of all on the pop-type
numbers. His voice is able to sound well in the
mid- and high-range and that's where Culture
Club gets such a satisfying commercial
sound. Boy George is also effective on the
album vocalizing in a near whisper.
Culture Club appears often on MTV which
is largely responsible for their hasty success
in the states. I sometimes find Georgie a little
tough to watch but the variation of music and
overall pop commercial sound works even
without video. I think I'll sUck with the audio
only however.

From the band that brought you Rock-Kihn-Roll
Next ofKlhn and Kihn-fualon comes the
Greg Kihn Band's latest release Kihn-
splracy. This LP sounds like a late '70s rocker album.
I like this. It seems that rock and roll hasn't
really changed as much as a lot of people
think. At least Greg Kihn would think so. Kihn
and his four-man California band keep putting
out the electric sound with three- and even
four-part harmony and the dominant per-
cussion accompanying both. I got a great kick
out of Side Two Cut One "I Fall to Pieces."
It's a rock remake of the late '50s country-
western blockbuster by Patsy Cline. A
tremendous surprise that works.
The first single release off the Beserkly
Records LP was "Jeopardy" which climbed
all the way to No. 1 across the country on the
rock charts proving that rock and roll doesn't
have to change to sound good.
I'm looking forward to more releases in the
future by the Greg Kihn Band. And maybe
they'll keep their the traditional American
rock sound and title their next LP Klhn-tuchy.
