Award
: NEW YORK (AP) - Pole vaultcr
' pllly Olson whose failure to qualify for
the U.S. track and field team was a
major surprise at the Olympic! Trials
received an award for achievement in
amateur sports Thursday although he
said he had. considered not. showing up
because of his embarrassment
"I thought I would be facing an empty
room" said Olson after being
presented with the Tanqueray Award
which had been voted to him before the
Trials.
: He said he overcame his reluctance
to appear at the awards luncheon
because of the realization that "I was
being honored for my past ex-
periences." I Olson was the first to vault over 19
: feel indoors when he cleared 19-OV4 at a'
1983 meet In Toronto and he has been
consistently among the top indoor
vaultcrs.
: Olson started his pole vaulting career
in high school. He was at Abilene
. Christian University helping a friend
with the vault in the summer between
iis sophomore and junior years of high
school. One afternoon he picked up a
pole as an experiment. The next thing
Jie knew he was clearing 12-6 and
gating his friend the high school's
best vaulter. Word got around to the
"track coach who talked Olson into
staking up the sport seriously.
: He cleared 13 feet in his first meet
Jook second place his junior year at the
district meet with a personal record of
k13-9 and first place two days later at the
-City of Abilene meet with a personal
Record of 15 feet. And he won the state
meet his senior year.
' Olson won the NAIA national title
.indoors and outdoors all four years at
Abilene Christian. And although he
nissed most of 1961 as a result of In-
. 'juries by 1982 he was ranked first in the
world In the pole vault by Track and
Field New as well ns top male track
and field athlete in the world for the
1982 indoor season after jumping 14
meets over seven weeks and breaking
the world record four times.
