Old sodas are Peppers v
SAN DIEGO Texas (AP) I'm a
Pepper he's a Pepper. Walt stop tho
' music! How about I'm a Bruncla?
Rumor has It that a now-defunct
South Texas' soft drink could be the
original "Peppers." As far as some
okl timers are concerned some
recently discovered bottles dating
back to the 1920s simply add to the
saga of the Duval county soda pop
mystery.
Two 73-year-old gents Donato
Serna and Hugo lbanez. won't swear
to it but they've got reason to believe
that a soft drink manufactured in San
Diego some 60 years ago tastes much
like today's Dr Pepper one of the
oldest world-wide product.
Curiosity arose earlier this year at
the San Dlcgo Creek when county
workers stumbled upon three aging
soda bottles that are believed to be-
part of a once fledging home-grown
bottling company from the roaring
20s.
"Old timers here would say the
taste was similar to Dr Pepper" says
Serna a life-long resident of the
Duval County town. "I'm not trying
to say It did ... but from what I
remember that soft drink was a big
thing here all those years ago"
As the story goes Bruno Rios a
promlent pharmacist developed a
soda back in 1922 a t the fountain of his
drug store calling it Bruncla. During
Texas prison officials
to reverse old policy
IPJNTSVILLE (AP) Texas
prison officials are about to reverse a
long-standing policy and reward
some inmates for good behavior by
allowing them "contact visits"
during which they may hug or touch
family members.
"I think it will be very limited in
scope" said Texas Department of
Corrections spokesman Phil Guthrie.
"It wil be very limited and controlled
and nota general type thing."
Guthrie said a provision allowing
limited contact between selected
inmates and approved visitors is part
of a new plan for classifying inmates.
The' plan was approved Tuesday by
prison officials here.
Currently inmates are separated
from visitors by glass and wire mesh
barriers. For years prison officials
have resisted efforts by reform
groups and the Legislature to change
tho policy.
But Guthrie said the new prison
director Ray Procunier hopes the
