I've taken some abuse this weekend.
It seems that everyone has a bad day here or there. I had a
bad three days.
Oh sure I had fun at the annual journalismmass com-
munication retreat at Cisco Christian Camp. It was a good
break from a hectic week of school and gave me the op
portunity to get to know some very good friends a little better.
And for a change I had the opportunity to eat some excellent
food. But I took some abuse. But not as much as the Wildcat
football team.
As for my abuse my team couldn't seem to do anything
right. I know that when a bunch of friends get together for a
ieekend of fun it's supposed to be fun But l Hale loiose. we
couldn't do anything right I know I'm not the only person to
experience this type of situation either.
I would call a down-an-out and the entire team would go
down-and-in and I would get sacked. I hate tQ get sacked. After
two and one half hours of three down and punt football we all
decided that we had enough football for one day.
Next I thought I'd try my luck at diving. I figured I had
every tiling Greg Louganis had; desire skill and most of all
looks
We found ourselves a rock at Lake Cisco that rose about
eight feet above the water level. We were talking some serious
kcapulco cliff diving. I had a lot of experience in diving so I
figured I could sweep the competition. In that sport. I don't
anyone who can better execute the "screamin like a maniac"
dive or for that matter "the midnight ride of Paul Revere".
That is the classic dive In which one person dives while
someone else Is riding on his back. Needless to say the British
judges gave mc only 6.5's on that particular dive.
Things were going well until tragedy struck In the water. It
always turns out that some anti-Woodsy Owl has to break a
bottle in the water so a careless swimmer like me can step on
it and cut his foot. Needless to say it happened.
I was thinking of calling it a day and heading back to
Abilene. But I decided I would tough it out and wait until
lornine to go home. So I grabbed the basketball and went out
to shoot some hoops. Then along comes Curtis Williams and
we started shooting around and I was doing all right. I was
making the 15-footers and he wasn't hitting anything So I
thought this would be the perfect chance to bulk up some of
the confidence that had been shot down all day long.
Sure enough I was taken for the fool again. I challenged
Curtis to a game of pig. If I make a shot he has to make the
Fjwame one ana vice versa. 10 my aismay uuriw w a .wu-ume
Mil pig champion back in Sacramento Calif. and after'a short
10 minute game Iwas headed to the showers) .&
Thus ends the account of a day in the life of a dejected sports
editor. As I stated before I've taken a lot of abuse this
weekend.

Rangers knock Twins out of first place
'0
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) the
Minnesota Twins' honeymoon is over
and the drudgery has already star-
ted. The Texas Rangers behind
knuckleballer Charlie Hough's
baffling pitching and homers from
Donnie Scott Gary Ward and Buddy
Bell beat the Twins 9-3 Sunday.
That defeat coupled with Kansas
City's 6-5 triumph over Seattle
knocked the Twins out of first place in
the American League West for the
first time since Aug. 4.
Kansas City opens a three-game
series in Minnesota tonight. And
Hough an expert on the Twins likes
Minnesota's chances.
"I think they got a real good shot"
said Hough who's 80 against the
Twins in his career with a 2.08 earned
run average.
"They 're young and aggressive ami
they have absolutely nothing to lose"
Hough said. "They weren't supposed
to be here so they should have ab-
solutely no pressure on them."
Hough 36 said three factors will
help the Twins the Metrodome
their bats and their pitching.
"They know how to play in here and
boy the ball bounces strange" he
said. "I also like their offense.
They've been pressing a little but if
they start being the free-wheeling
slashers they always are they could
win this thing.
"They also got some guys who can
pitch too."
Scott a 22-year-old rookie catcher
begs to differ with his experienced
battery mate. .. -- -
"The big key to me Is your lead-off
man and your best reliever. !ss!h-i
ninth" Scott said.
"I don't know why Kirby Puckett
doesn't run more. With guys like Kent
Hrbck Mickey Hatcher and Tom
Brunansky it's Kirby and Tim
Teufel's job to get to second and
third. I wasn't impressed with their
lead oris."
Scott figures that tho Royals' lead-
off man Willie Wilson and their ace
reliever Dan Quiscnberry might
have an advantage over their Min-
nesota counterparts Puckett and
Ron Davis.
But Minnesota Manager Billy
Gardner wasn't panicking after
Sunday's setback
After all the Twins still took two-of-three
from the TexasThe rest of the
year if we can take a series we've
got a heck of a shot" Gardner said
Minnesota's Mickey Hatcher said
tonight's scries is crucial.
"I think the biggest factor in the
race will be who comes out of the
series ahead" Hatcher said. "W&j
have to play this series for the'
momentum." - ' ' j
Texas scored five runs in the f ouf tti
inning Sunday with Scott's three-run
homer the key blow and never lookpd. '

The Rangers' added three more In.

17th homer to go ahead 8-0.
Minnesota's Kent Hrbek's whacKedf4

off Hough to make it 8-3 in the bottom
of the fifth. . ;

longest hit in the Metrodomc's three-
year history. .
