in Elmer Gray Stadium and forced a
final game between the two teams for

Brian Beaty Trojans' quarterback
threw for two touchdowns and ran for
a third to cap drives of 74 39 and SO
yards to lead his team to the win over
its previously undefeated opponent.
Trojans arrived first at the stadium
about 30 minutes before game time to
prepare for the must-win contest. Sub

The eagerness of the Trojans ap-
parently paid off when after a
scoreless first quarter an in-
terception by Larry Boone junior
from Abilene stopped a Sub T drive
on the Trojan 6-yard line.
Beaty from Woodbridge Va. then
led his team methodically downfield.
His runs and short passes took
Trojans to Sub Ts 10-yard line. Gary
Brophy from Abilene caught tfio
game's first touchdown pass. Jeff
Blakeley from Dallas who was in-
strumental in the drive added the 2-
point conversion.

A scoring threat by Sub T late in the
first half ended at the Trojan 7-yard
line as Trojans' defense and Sub T
mistakes kept them' out of the'Sfia
zone leaving Trojans an 8-0 lead.
Kelly Smith senior from Dallas
caught an 8-yard pass from Beaty
early in the second half to increase
Trojans lead to 14-0.
Trojans' last score was notched by
Beaty. He covered the final 10 yards
of a 50-yard drive on a run.
Sub T's score had come quickly lit
the second half. Mark Allen junior
from Garland pitched to Mark
Wilson from Throckmorton who was'
able to cut across the field and race to

The ACU women's basketball team
will open its 1984-85 season Friday at
6 p.m. in Moody Coliseum against
Southwestern University
The Wildcats are prc-season picks
to win their third consecutive Lone
Star Conference title. Last year the
Cats shared the honor will) Southwest
Texas State.
In a pre-season poll conducted by
Texas A&I sports information the
Wildcats received 11 of 18 first place
votes to take the favorite's nod over
runner-up Texas A&I and third place
Angelo State.
Head coach Burl McCoy said he is
ready for the season to begin. The
Wildcats have been practicing once a
day since school started.
"I think we're ready for the game"
said McCoy. "The first game of the
year is always exciting because you
find out what you're really made of."
ACU is scheduled to play some
tough opponents according to Mc-
Coy The Wildcats will meet such
teams as University of Pennsylvania
Texas A&M Oklahoma and
University of Hawaii. The team Is
also scheduled to play Point Loma
which Is in Portervllle Calif. home
of junior Wildcat guard Deonna
Moore.
"We have to play a real tough
schedule before we begin con-
ference" said McCoy. "Playing
those tough teams should prepare us
better for the battle ahead.' '
The Wildcats have some out-
standing players that will make their
debut Friday night. Claudia Schleyer
junior from Albuquerque N.M. is
expected to lead the Wildcat attack
against Southwestern. She Is a 5-9
forward who was named to the first
team Kodak all-America team by the
Women's Basketball Coaches
Association. Schleyer led the nation
in scoring with a 25.1 average. She

a 55-yard touchdown.
After Beaty's touchdown had made
the score 20-6'John Wilson caught an
Allen pass deep in the end zone ofi the
dead run to cap a short drive and put
the Subbers back in reach at 20-12.
Sub T stopped Trojans late in the
game to get the ball back for one last
chance. Four passes by Allen fell'
incomplete however and Trojans
only needed to run one play before
time expired.
The game was played before one of
the largest intramural crowds of the
year. Many fans crowded the
sidelines while still others sat in the
stands of Elmer Gray Stadium.

starters returning from lost year's 20-
7 season. Moore will start at the
guard position and Jana Edwards
senior from O'Donncl will play the
other forward position opposite
Schleyer. Moore averaged 10.4 points
a game and was named first team all-
LSC. Edwards averaged 0.1 points a
game.
Moore had her best game as a
Wildcat against East Texas State in
the opening round of the LSC tour-
nament. She scored 23 points to pocc
the Cats "We can count on Deonna to
pull through when other teams are
keying on Claudia" said McCoy.
"I'm expecting great things out of her
Uils year."
Eight other lettermen are retur-
ning who saw considerable playing
time last year. They Include guards
Pattl Conner sophomore from El
Paso and Monica Schultz
sophomore from Irving; forwards
Allison Jewell sophomore from
Albuquerque N.M. and Karen
Bryant Junior from Alice; and center
Cara Wllks sophomore from Corpus
Christl.
"We have some good young kids
who are playing good basketball"
said McCoy. "Our two freshman are
Improving rapidly and should
contribute a lot to the team.
The two freshman on the Wildcat
team are Sue Maxwell from
Eastland and Shelly Wolf from
Duncanville. Maxwell has been
working at the guard position and
Wolf at the wing position.
The Wildcats have three
newcomers who should help
tremendously said McCoy Vanessa
Calloway M guard and -8 forward
Angelia Gardner are both transfers
from Clarendon Junior College
Freshman center Trish Winder
should help add height to the Wildcat
roster.

ACU head football coach Ted Sitton
asked the administration not to renew
his contract as head football coach
for 1985. The announcement was
made in a press conference Thursday
morning.
"I have met with the ad-
ministration and asked them not to
renew my contract as head football
coach for 1985" Sitton said. "In my
opinion Uils Is the right time to select
a new football coach to head up the
program for the future. I think wo
have an excellent program and hope
it will continue to be one. I will always
be involved with ACU and the
Wildcats."
Coaching has been Sitton's life for
tho past 18 years The last six of those
years were as head coach for the
Wildcats. He has been Involved with
ACU athletics as a player and coach
for 23 years.
"This has been my life" said
Sitton. "Almost half of my life has
been spent at ACU. I'm a Wildcat
and I'll always be a Wildcat. I'm a
winner I've played on winning
teams and I've coached winning
teams."
Coach Sitton said he asked Wally
Bullington ACU athletic director
and the administration to evaluate
the football program. Garvin
Bcauchamp president of the Lone
Star Conference and President
William J. Teague were also in on the
decision.
"I'm hurting" said Sitton. "I'm
sure everyone can understand how I
feel. I believe that the decision we
made was the best and I'm 100
percent behind it."
Sitton is a 1954 graduate of ACU
and a former Wildcat quarterback
and assistant coach. His record as
head coach Is &-28-1. Sitton 52 was a
three-sport star at Stamford High
School where he graduated in 1949.

Stacy Atkinson named
to tournament team
Stacy Atkinson of the ACU Wildcat
volleyball team was among eight LSC
players named to the Lone Star
Conference all tournament team
after the LSC championship tour-
nament this past weekend in.

Before the tournament began
Atkinson led the. Wildcat team with
423 kills and 166 errors in 1056 total
attempts. Atkinson also had 18 ser-
vice aces and 51 solo blocks
Atkinson said it was a great honor
and corned all-conference honors
twice. Holed the 1950 Wildcat team to
the university's only undefeated
untied season In history with an 1 T
record Including a bowl gamo vKj
At ACU he has coached) five
quarterbacks who have thrown for
more than 2000 yards in one Season.
He was named Coach of tho Year In
the Lone Star Conference in 1931 nftcr
guiding the Wildcats to an 8-2 record
his best season as Wildcat head
coach.
He was offensive coordinator for
Wildcat teams in 1973 and 1977 which
won NAIA Division I national
championships. Five ACU players
coached by Sitton currently plv

University is indebted to coach Sitton
for his great service ond the role

people over the years."
Dr. Teague said coach Sitton's
contribution to ACU won't be
measured In the win-loss column.
"His contribution is what he has
meant to personal development of his
players" said Teague. "He Is a life
changing personality. It's like saylncL
goodbye to a friend who Is going f B
vacation. We will miss him but wtr
will be looking forward to him coming
back."
Sitton said his decision to leave is
not because of the record of his team
this year. "This has been a tough
season" said Sitton. "I'm sorry for
my players. It bothers them but I've
been through these things before."
Bullington said the administration
is already in the process of looking for
a head coach.
"We hope to moke the decision
within the next 10 days" said
Bullington. "We feel it is essential tf
us to hire a new coach so we con begL-
with recruiting for next year's
team."
