To the editor;
olt was with great dismay that I read
.tile ."cartoon" about South African;
"apartheid in your April 16 issue. I have
always enjoyed reading the Optimist
with its informative articles and funpy -cartoons.
This "cartoon" however
yas totally out of character. It was writ-
ten in total ignorance and was obvious-
ly aimed at sensationalism.
!' Cartoons of this nqture arc neither
funny nor factual and the "only thing
(they do is evoke resentment and fuel-.
the fires of revolution. Like the United
States South Africa has its problems '

Our answers to such questions;
First in two cases no men even ap-

most likely male candidate for a post
deferred to the woman whtrrecelved kf

running entered the race at the last mo-

him for the post.
Second all of the women said they do
not perceive their posts as spiritual

abilities He has given us to the ac-
complishing of His purposes and so we
should. We should all keep the end
goals of our organizations in mind not
the gender of the organization's leader
and offer our fullest service to that end.
Finally Jesus offered more liberation
and affirmation to women than any
man before Him in history ever had.
Burat the same time He offered greater
challenges of commitment and service
to both men and women than any other
person ever had.
We hope all our student leaders
men or women will wholeheartedly
respond to the merciful yet demanding
nature of His call. We should pray for
nothing less.
South African policemen and authorities
who have either ordered or participated in
the sickeningly violent attacks against the
blacks.
The injustices taking place there are
definitely not humorous. But we hoped to
point out with the cartoon the obvious
hypocrisy of the authorities' talking about
a peaceful resolution of conflict while con-
tinuing to order the killing of blacks. Such
hypocritical double-talk from some
authorities was and is much in evidence
in the continuing struggle by American
blacks for racial equality and it is just as
deplorable here as in South Africa.
We know that no one is without sin
and that some blacks in South Africa
have exhibited equally racist attitudes and
violent actions toward the whites and this
we also find deplorable. We wish both
sides would stop hurting and would start
talking meaningfully.
Finally we strongly affirm these letter-
writers' insistence on the importance of
prayer in resolving these conflicts and
want everyone to know our conviction
that to properly succeed all struggles for
peace and justice must be firmly rooted in
prayer our prayer and yours.)

Only three weeks left. x
The thought of that brings smiles to
everyone expccially seniors.
Or does it?
Do we really know what that meansttm
After these last three weeks of our
college career graduating seniors
once we leave this institution it may be
a long time before we'll again see some
of the people with whom we've spent
the last four years. It's possible we
might not sec some of them ever again.
I've been pondering this for a while
now.
Ever since spring break this thought
has recurred to mc again and again as
I've sat in classes.
After this semester is over and I'ndfe
graduated I'll be many miles awa
from some of the closest friends I've
ever had in my entire life.
So lately I've been spending less time
on some of my studies so I can spend
more time with some people I really
love. .
It's been a fast four years and I really
want to make these last few weeks real-
ly special.
I'm realizing and I hope all the rest
of us almost-graduates are realizing
that we are going to be leaving som&lfe
great friendships behind. B
I know some of these friendships will
probably last forever and others we'll
remember for years to come. But who
knows when will we get to see these
friends again?
Only God really knows.
I just want to appeal to you especial-
ly to those who arc graduating and
moving away to take some time out
and let those people with whom you've
been friends the past four years know
you'll miss them and you'll continue to
love them. w
After all people are what matter.
Grades are important and career pro-
specoare a big priority at this stage in
life but people and loving them are
