Speck says Christianity Islam share
overlooked similarities in doctrine
ly Curtte R. Okim
Optrmiat Staff
From (he Crusades to the classroom Christianity
and Islam have often come Into conflict. 'What' is
often overlooked are thek similarities.
These similarities and the basic differences
were outlined by Dr. Henry Speck at a meeting in
the Chapel On the Hill Feb. 7
"Muslims ... by and large see themselves as
part of tlie Judeo-Christian tradition" Speck said.
"Many of the stories found in the Koran arc bib-
lical stories from the Old Testament."
Muslims are more flexible in their Interpreta-
tion of the Koran than Christians are of the Bible
he said.
"You can disagree" Speck said.- "If you inter-
pret this part (one way) they'll say 'That way?
OK.'
"By and large Muslims have said if you're a
Jew; be a good Jew if you're a Christian; be a
good Christian; if you're a Muslim be a good
Muslim" he said.
"And being "a good Muslim doesn't depend on
how you interpret" a particular word or phrase in
the text Speck said:
However when it comes to the teachings of
the New Testament the two faiths take different
paths.
The major stumbling btock to Muslims Is the
very cornerstone of Christian belief that of
Christ crucified he aid. They do not believe it
could have happened.
"Man could not crucify Ood that's the way
they look at it" Speck said
Although Muslims do not believe God showed
his love to them by sacrificing his son they do
believe he shows them love in other ways he
said.
"In an immediate sense lie shows love to them
by blessings of health large families blessed with
children; a certain amount of wealth" Speck
said.
Even though they believe God can bkss them
materially he does expect them to use the wealth
for worthy causes he said.
Speck said a student in Iran where he taughf f 1
before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 pohted
out a large house to him as they rode in a taxj.j$
The student said her uncle bought the house. .
hired doctors and nurses and provided medical i
equipment for 20 psychiatric patients free of
"If what you can do Is a little thing you d$:
that" Speck said. "If what you can do is a b1g!.
thing you do that. That's part of God's blessing '
from a Muslim point of view."
God's biggest blessing for Muslims as well as v
for Christians Is the promise of paradise he saldfr
This goal of eternal salvation is one of many J-
shared similarities he said.
"If we (discussed) what normally is considered
dogma you would find that Muslims agree with .
you on virtually everything" Speck said. "Things
like the greatness of God taking care of the wld
ows and orphans and living a pure life unspot-
ted. "All of these things they would agree with
you absolutely" he said . 41
