3 Year Agreement
Calls For Game At
- Lubbock Nov. 17
Confirmation of reports thnt the
Slrtmons University Cowboys will
play the Texas Tech Matadors at Lub-
bock In football November 17 1028
the date which the Matadors woro
supposed to play in Abilene Is made
in a joint announcement from Ath-
letic Directors Brldjres and Frccland
of both schools. In changing the
dates of tho game for this fall the
Cowboys and Matadors will meet on
Thanksgiving November 28 1020 in
Abilene and Thanksgiving November
27 1030 in Lubbock.
The series according to Coach
Bridges was proposed by the athletic
council of Simmons and accepted by
Texas Tech. The fact that the games
of 1020 and 1030 arc to be plnyod on
Thanksgiving indicates that tho break
between Howard Payno and Simmons
for that date will bo permanent.
Tho reason for substituting tho
Lubbock school for Howard Payno is
that Simmons nnd Tech arc the two
largest schools in West Texas and
both having their eyes on the South
western conference makes them nat-
ural rivals. In tlmo this game be-
tween the two schools should prove to
be ono .of the most interesting foot-
ball classics in the Southwest football
circles.
Final arrangements for the games
with Tech wero perfected Tuesday
night in Lnbbock by Frank B. Brid-
ges athletic director of Simmons Uni-
versity and E. Y. Frccland athletic
director of Tech.
The game for November 17 was an-
nounced some time ago to bo played
in Abilene but the two-year agree-
ment to nlav on Thankseivine by the
two schools comes ns one of tho
biggest and most welcomed surprises
to the alumni and backers of Simmons
athletics.

Education Reforms
Become A Pastime
(Now Students News Service)
These are busy days for tho edu-
cational roformers both thoso who
are Instituting reforms and those
who arc writing critiques for tho
magazines. University of Michigan
has definitely determined to begin
next fall the plan of conferring two-
year diplomas on students deemed
incapable of carrying upper division
work. Some difficulty is anticipated
in the matter of selection even Presi-
dent Little foremost exponent of the
plan questioning grades as a suit-
able and honest criterion. None the
less tho plan will bo tried.
As the "Daily Princotonlan" com-
ments "With Michigan trying the
two-year diploma; with Wisconsin
studying separate civilization as a
whole instead of disconnected miscel-
laneous courses; with Antioch com-
bining manual and mental labor in
its curriculum; with Harvard intro-
ducing two week 'reading periods'
before examinations; with Princeton
experimenting with tho four course
plan and preceptorinl system we are
entitled to hope for better things in
the line of education in tho course
of the next few years."

Tho Trinity University Tlgors by

feated tho Simmons baskctccrs in a
hnrd fought game Monday afternoon
by a 32 td 20 count. The dark horso
team from East Texas now occupies
the top berth in the conference title
race with One win nnd none lost.
The Tigers took a 20 to 13 lead
in tho first half but tho Cowboys ral-
lied to overcome this lead In the sec-
ond half nnd with ono minute to piny
tho Cowboys lead 20 to 28. But field
goals n rapid succession by Hill and
Elms of tho Tigers gnvo them the
big end of the filial count.
Ralph Binion nnd Roger Elms of
the Tigers lead the scoring with 12
points ench. Gregg high point mnn
for Simmons followed closely with
ten points while Hill of Trinity scored
8 points.
Exceptionally fast defensive work
at the guard positions was displayed
by Huffman and Rhome of Trinity
nnd Smith of Simmons.
Play Here Monday
What the Cowboys had hoped to be
a stepping stone by which they might
climb into the top berth of the con-
ference title rnco proved to be a fac-
tor in tho lowering of their confer-
ence percentage. Playing on an out-
door court was probably largely re-
sponsible for the surprise which the
East Texas Bengals handed to the
Cowboys.
Tho second game of tho Waxaha-
chic series which was to have been
plnyed Tuesday afternoon was called
on account of rain.
Tho Tigers and Cowboys will meet
again Monday and Tuesday nights of
next week on the Corral floor. By
defeating Howard Payne and Trinity
two gnmes each the homo club can
still cop the conference championship
providing St. Edwards hands South
western n defeat. For this reason
the games should be thrilling encoun
ters.

ingr larger schools. Don't you know
that by playing a large school from
the north or other far away points
is going to add to the prestige ol
Simmons nnd can't we all realize that
"Daddy" Amis' leaving Howard Payne
will weaken that institution in the
field of athletic 7 It seems that au-
thorities in charge knows their busi-
ness and certainly no criticism should

give our support to the council and
don't make criticisms for by making

In tho eyes of the public.
Bunk - House Bunk
By John D. Harvey
Looking bnck over our football
relations with Howard Payne a wave
of regret passes over mo as realiza
tion that never again shall that
colorful gridiron classic so dear to
every student and cx-student of both
schools take place on Tdrkey Day.
I guess the reason for this feeling
is that it is an established trndition
nnd you know that they are mighty
hard to tear down. True wo shall
meet the Yellow Jackets next season
nnd coming seasons but not on thnt
day of days -when every student and
ex-student are making pilgrimages to
the scene of battle.
Howard Payne fray it seems that
Coach Bridges and the athletic council
arc looking into the future and seeing
great things for Simmons. They are
trying to reach out and put Simmons
before the eyes of the world by play-
Prof. Bond: Mr. Cureton how
would you change this sentence: He
was driving an old mule attached to a
cart that was blind in ono eye.
Arnold: Ho was driving an old
mule with one eye thnt was attached
to a enrt.
Probably this movo Is for the good
but it will be a hard matter to make
old students realize that the battle
they loved so well and held above all
other recollections of college days Ib
a thing of the past and in what spirit
they shn.ll receive it remains to be
seen.
All over the campus can be heard
bits of criticisms on the matter both
good and bad. Mnny of the remarks
arc justified and many unjustified.
But I would suggest ns a matter of
courtesy thnt wo be careful with our
remarks and not be too prejudiced to
see both Bides of the question.
Conch Bridges will conduct a conch-
ng course in Simmons including the
three major sports football basket-
ball and track. The date for tho
course has been set for June 12 until
July 14 this summer. Edwin Kubalc
line coach at T. C. U. Flowd (Jim)
Crow athletic director of Baylor U.
nnd Earle (Mule) Frazier widely
known cinder performer will assist
Mr. Bridges.
Tho course will bo open to nil men
students nnd will give scholastic
credit of a full major in education.
It wil be highly intensive dealing
with all of the details involved in
coaching. The course is intended for
those who expect to tench and coach
athletics.
"It is not necessary for a boy to
be a good athlete to make a good
coach" Coach Bridges states "I have
known several boys who took this
course in Baylor and mndc a success
with their teams that were not ath
letes."
To new students coming in tho pasi-
ing of the annual Turkey Day clash
with Howard Payno will not mean so
much as they don't realize how much
it means to every Simmonsite of to-
day. In tho course of a few years
there will probably bo another tra-
ditional rival even greater than
Howard Payne nnd indications are
that that rival will be Texas Tech.
I don't mean by this that we have
any hnrd feelings toward Tech nor
they townrd us but it is natural to
assume that the fight between the
two largest schools in West Texas for
supremacy in that Bection would
nnturally culminate in a spirit of
rivalry.

Looking over severnl of our neigh-
boring school papers I find thnt they
nre turning their attention to base-
ball. To seo other schools practicing
baseball and Simmons not makes me
feel pretty bad. But in a week or so
I would dare say we will be so inter-
ested in track and spring football
tiaining that our thoughts will turn
away from the diamond at least a
little bit. I wish as do many others
that we were playing baseball but
the authorities can't see it that way
and so long as they see it as thoy
do it will remain so.
