MURRAY EVANS AS HEAD football coach at Hardin-Simmons
came as not surprise to us even though we wouldn't have bet on
the subject last week. But we do think that the athletic committee
made a wise and sound selection when they selected Evans to lead
the Pokes next season.
From what we have seen and heard Evans is a jovial fellow
and is bked by everyone on the forty acres. Those are two assets
that a coach must have if he is to obtain the best from his athletic
team.
We also liked the way that Murray was presented to the student
body. H-SU students had the privilege of knowing the name of the
new coach "before" everyone else instead of reading about it in
the newspapers.
Students on the campus knew about the selection only about a
half-hour after the story had been released to the newspapers. Then
the papers didn't have a chance to print the story before the after-
noon editions.
THEN CAME THE ANNOUNCEMENT about the fact that
Sammy Baugh the quarterback master of football had been ap-
pointed as an associate coach. That was a good break!
We are sure that Baugh could have got a coaching job at a bigger
school than Hardin-Simmons But as he put it "I like the colorful
athletic teams at H-SU." He is going to be a big help during spring
training.
JUST ABOUT THE MOST downcast person on the H-SU cam-
pus the past week has been basketball .mentor Bill Scott. Scott has
been having a rough time lately with his basketball team.
For a while it looked like the Cowboys were going to make the
first division in the Border Conference race but now things don't
look so well.
You can be sure that Scott won't be making any excuses about
the games that his team have lost this year. The boys tried as hard
as they knew how but ...
We've said "his' team in the last few paragraphs. Should have
said "our" team.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR A good football team next year. It al-
ways seems to happen at a school where there is a shake up in the
coaching staff. But we still feel that there is too much emphasis
placed upon football at H-SU.
We read an article the other day about Texas Western College
in El Paso and the fact that there wasn't too much emphasis placed
upon football at that Border Confrence school.
If a miner team lose9 a gridiron game they take it in good
spirit and just hope for better next time. That's not a bad
philosophy.
ONE OF THE BUSIEST PEOPLE at H-SU last Tuesday when
the coaching story broke was the invincible George Hine Jr. ath
letic puDiicny director.
Hine. was up at the crack of dawn and before most people had
turned off their alarm clocks and was busily typing out the story
of Evans ayi Baugh.
That afternoon Hine Bill Ledbetter new athletic director and
Gib Sandefer were on their way to Rotan to talk to Baugh .about the
job that he had accepted.
During the third quarter of the H-SU Tech basketball game
that night in walked Hine looking like a Pennsylvania coal miner.
We don't envy his job in the least!!
DOTS AND DASHES The "B" Team worked out against
Snyder High School in Rose Field House Wednesday afternoon.
The Snyder boys looked good . . . John Pack 1951 New Mexico low
and high hurdles champion from Carlsbad has enrolled at H-SU
'. . . Al Yanez and Cotton Fowler were in Fort Worth with the
Abilene boxing team this week for the state Golden Gloves meet.
Sam Baugh Will Begin
Coaching Duty Monday
ROTAN Feb. 14. Sammy
Baugh said tonight he would re-
port to Hardin-Simmons as asso-
ciate coach Monday.
The dean of professional foot-
ballers and former TCU great
who sets a new record every time
he plays for the Washington Red-
skins said he would assist newly
named head football coach Mur-
ray Evans anrd his other assist-
ants Larry Cunningham and Bill
Scott already on the campus.
Baugh said that he had been
talking to H-SU athletic officials
for some two weeks and that he
would have accepted a full tun
position on' the Cowboy staff if
it had not been for obligations
v. with the Redskins.
Also Baugh said he wouldn't
have to report for work with the
Redskins until? August and that
he was anxious to work as assist-
ant coach at H-SU.
Baugh did not disclose his sal-
ary but stated that he was well
pleased with the H-SU stated
terms. He also stated that if for
some reason he didn't rejoin the
Redskins this coming season he
would return to H-SU to assist
with football this fall.
H-SU's western atmosphere
and Cowboy tradition always
have appealed to me" Baugh
stated.
Baugh's Double Mountain
Ranch near Rotan where he
lives is but' 85 miles from the
H-SU campus.

Clinton (Cush) Holder 6'2 220-
pound Hardin-Simmons Univer-
sity Cowboy All-Border Confer-
ence tackle has signed a contract
with the professional New York
Giants football team.
Holder earned three letters in
football and was- co-captain of
last year's team. He was named
on the Associated Press AU-Bor-der
Conference eleven and also
was given AU-American (honor-
able mention.
Captain Jack Alderson of the
Raiders however was the second
leading scorer of the night with
15 markers.
The Cowboys jumped into an
early quarter lead 6-1 but field
goals by Nolen and Virgil John-
son and a free toss by Nolen tied
the count at 7-7 after four min-
utes of play.
Ahead To Slay
Turner put the Raiders ahead
to stay at the six minute mark
11-10 and the Raiders went'on to
a 21-14 first quarter lead. Playing
against a new H-SU team in the
second quarter the Tech lads ex-
tended their margin to eight
points at halftime. 39-31.
The Raiders pulled away quick-
ly in the third period to ice the
tilt. Alderson Johnson and No-
len hit field goals to send the
Raiders ahead; 45-31 and the
Techsans were off.
Although the Lubbock quint
cooled off in the final period
when they meshed only six
points their tremendous lead was
never endangered.
