Tho H-SU varsity rifle team com-
posed of six H-SU and two McMurry
students is shooting it out with vari-
ous schools in the southwest.
The rifle team is sponsored by the
ROTC department.
The team members are Josie
Loya the only female member; Gary
Morrison; Tony Arriolla; Chuck
Lawson; Clay Young; Alan Brooks;
and the two McMurry students
John Wells and Herb Lattimore.
"The team puts out a lot of effort"
commented rifle team coach M-Sgt.
Charles E. Smith Principal ROTC
Drill Instructor. "It takes a lot of
concentration and patience and
involves a great deal of mental
strain" he said.
The team uses 22 caliber heavy
barrel match rifles. Each rifle
weighs about 13 pounds.
In competition a contestant fires
from a distance of 50 feet toward
a target measuring 1 inches in
diameter. The target is graduated
into 10 rings the center being only
a small dot. The high score of 10 is
earned with a "bull's eye".
Each contestant fires from 3 posi-
tions: prone (lying) kneeling and
standing. Ten targets are shot from
each position. The perfect score is
300 with average scores usually
about 260.
The team has competed twice
once in the Southwest Conference
and once in intercollegiate com-
petition. Other matches scheduled
are a National Rifle Association
meet on March 17 and intercol-
legiate competition in El Paso on
March 29-31 and in San Antonio on
April 20-21.
