'Run for Life to theme
fitness tests for PE classes
"Run for Life" will be the
theme of all physical education
classes next Tuesday and Wed-
nesday Sept. 25 26.
And the action won't be
limited to students as members
of the faculty and administra-
tion also will be invited to take
part in the two days of fitness
testing.
What they'll be doing under
the direction of Dr. Mike Collins
and his PE staff will be running
a mile and a half. These distance
runs will be administered every
class period beginning at 8 a.m.
and going until 3 p.m. The
results will be information on
the physical fitness level of each
participant.
The tests are based on Dr.
Kenneth Cooper's book
"aerobics" which states that
men and women under 30
should be able to run-walk the
lVt miles in less than 12
minutes. Dr. Collins and his
staff hope to get a good idea of
the general physical condition of
the H-SU student body. After-
ward individualized programs
will be developed to meet the
physiological needs of students.
The aerobic philosophy
developed by Dr. Cooper famed
More sports in sight
for intramural play
Flag football dominates the
men's intramural scene this
month but a full slate of sports
is planned during the year
according to Max Brownlee
instructor in physical education
and director of intramurals.
Men's badminton competition
begins early next month with
the deadline for singles entries
set for Oct. 3. Actual play for
standings will start Oct. 8. All
matches will be played in Rose
Field House on selected days
from 6-8 p.m.
After badminton volleyball
takes over with the entry dead-
line set for Oct. 19. Competition
will start Oct. 25. Other sports
including basketball and table
tennis will come later.
"We need to emphasize par-
ticipation" Brownlee said. "The
dorms as well as the clubs
should form teams and just get
the whole university involved."
Information on the
intramural program may be
obtained at Brownlee's office in
Marston Gym.

Dallas physician refers to a var-
iety of exercises' that stimulate
the heart for a period of time
long enough to produce benefi-
cial changes in the body.
Dr. Cooper who spoke this
past summer at Abilene's First
Baptist Church said the main
objective of an aerobic exercise
program is to increase the max-
imum amount of oxygen the
body can process within a given
time. This is called your aerobic
capacity.
It is dependent on an ability
to (1) rapidly breathe large
amounts of air (2) forcefully
deliver large volumes of blood
and (3) effectively deliver
oxygen to all parts of the body.
"Aerobic capacity depends on
efficient lungs a powerful heart
and a good vascular system" Dr.
Collins said. "Because it reflects
the conditions of these vital
