Cowgirls Meet ACC Tonight
DR. TAYLOR RANKIN and Paula Andress display one of the specially made 1 00
Mile Club shirts which 28 students and professors will be wearing. They
qualified by running at least 100 miles during the fall semester. Dr. Mike
Collins seated supervised the activity and certified those who actually accomp-
lished the feat. (Byron Collins Photo)
Two basketball games are
scheduled for Taylor County
Coliseum Friday night one a
long-time rivalry and another
that could become such.
The Hardin-Simmons Cow-
boys coming off two road losses
to Houston Baptist and Pan
American try their luck against
always tough Oklahoma City
University in a 7:30 game. Prior
to that contest the H-SU Cow-
girls host Abilene Christian Col-
lege t 5:30.
In the Cowgirls' frist game of
the season they lost by nine
points to Ranger Junior College.
But in last week's scirmmage
with McMurry they came on
strong to win 24-23.
The Cowgirls' schedule re-
leased this week had them
battling at least 20 opponents
depending on their performance
in tournaments. The ACC game
Friday night renews a crosstown
rivalry of long standing. But
with the new emphasis on
women's sports and more money
in the athletic programs for
women the game and future
games with ACC could draw
much more attention.
Carrying the Cowgirl banner
will be nine talented but some-
what short cagers. Three fresh-
men three sophomores one
junior and two seniors comprise
the team and all have good bas-
ketball backgrounds.
Ada Feaster senior from Col-
orado City is one of the top re-
bounders for the team and Jan
Mears Roscoe senior can re-
bound and shoot. Junior
forward-guard Sue Tillbrook
from Wylie "The Spider"
preents good defense and out-
side shooting.
Team captain Regina Bryan
sophomore from that women's
basketball town of Tulia gives
the Cowgirls great outside
shooting and ball handling and
she was the team's top score
against Ranger with 10. Marcia
Brass sophomore from Rule
plays post and offers fine re
bounding ability Jana Jenkins
sophomore from Lockney is a
second-semester player and an
shoot and rebound well.
Freshman Robbie Lambert a
Hawley product will play guard
and offers good shooting from
outside. Mignon Williams
Hamlin freshman has good po-
tential at the guard spot after
playing all defense in high
school. The team's player for all
spots is freshman Karen Long
from Clyde. Karen is a great de-
fensive player and can shoot and
rebound and plays both post and
forward well. She collected 12
points in the McMurry scrimmage.
Pan American Downs 'Pokes
In 95-62 South Texas Pit
EDINBURG The Hardin-
Simmon Cowboys ignored the
warm weather of this South
Texas village and caught a cold
in their 95-62 loss to Pan Ameri-
can here Tuesday night. In a
display of how not to shoot the
basketball the 'Pokes hit only
27 of 70 field goal attempts and 9
of 18 free shots and were no
match for the nation's number
one NCAA independent cage
outfit.
The loss left the Cowboys with
a 3-11 record and the Broncos
continued to cruise along with a
13-1 mark. Pan American has a
record that equals that of Mary-
land and UCLA the nation's 3
and 4 teams and beats the re-
cords of 14 of the top 20 teams.
Five Broncos scored in double
figures Marshall Rogers had 32
points and 15 rebounds John
McDowell has 12 and 15 and
Gilbert King had 27 and 12.
Jeff Jamison scored a
season-high 18 points to lead the
'Pokes.
