sand goes every where—Into the

except canned ones, until the
next August. You might say
we have vegetables three months
in the year.
Then it rains only a little
during the year, and that all
comes during July, August and
September, as a rule.
When a crop is planted and
comes up we never know but
that a sand storm will kill it. If
it escapes a sand storm the rab-
bits may clean it up, and what
the rabbits don’t got (if it is
watermelons) the coyotes may
destroy it, and what they leave
somebody’s cattle may ruin. It
requires a solid wail ’leven feet
high to turn some cattle here.
I recall seeing a bunch of milk
cows just a few miles away on
the neck of each one of which
was one or two fence posts, or
a piece of boxing plank about
six to eight feet long. Seeing
these cows on the prairie makes
one think of a forest of posts or
ruins of some old box house. If
I ever see that bunch again
when I havo my kodak, I’ll send
you a picture, for it i& a "sight.”
There is no stock law here, but
if you turn young stock out the
coyotes will catch them
School and church facilities
are few and far between, but it
is good enough what there is of
it.
Then, it is a country of dis
tances and, in some sections,
poor roads. The two ideas can-
not be separated. If you start
eight miles the whole distance
may be like the sand bar on Red
river—a dead pull all the way.
Lastly (or I b elieve it is)there
are more bugs and insects to
depredate on certain crops than
I ever saw in mv life—cut worms
for the corn, squash bugs for
pumpkins and squashes, and
some strange little “critters’’
that work faithfully on turnips
and mustard.
This ought to be enough to
scare most folks away, and it
would be if it were not for some
advantages I will enumerate in
my next.
