resignation * of Honorable H.
Thomas, I submit whs following
as a brief statement of my viawa
on some important lasnes:
1. I am a democrat and hava
always voted tbe straight dem-
ocratic ticket, and therefore be-
lieve the will of tbe majority is
supreme, and that the platform
demands of the party are bind-
ing on the members of the leg-
islature and should be snacted
into laws as soon as practicable
after the convening of the legis-
lature. „
2. 1 am in favor of submit-
ting to the voters of Texas the
amendment to onr
Davidson of

proposed
state constitution, giving them
an opportunity of expressing at
the ballot box whether or not it
is their will that the sale of in-
toxicating liquors shall be pro-
hibited throughout the entire
state, and if elected will lend
my vote and support for tbe
passage of such a measure.
3. I favor that plank in the
state democratic platform which
provides for efficient public free
schools for at least six months
in the year and such legtslstion
as may be necessary to carry
that plank of the platform into
effect. I also favor tbe system
of industrial education now be-
ing fostered by the state and n
liberal provision for all said in-
dustrial institutions. I also
favor the liberal support of onr
State University and the A. &
M. College rnd appropriation
sufficient to furnish comfortable
quarters for all students so that
none may have to live in tents.
4. I do not favor such re-
strictive legislation as will drive
, .capital. Iron the State and re
tard the development of our re
sources and yet I favor such
control of corporations as will
prevent their exploiting tbe
people, and such legislation aa
will drive trusts and monopolies
from the state. «
5. I favor .such amendments
of our civil and criminal codes
1 as will secure speedy trials and
as far as poesiblo prevent the
delays which now so often de
feat the ends of justice.
0. Believing that nothing
would conduce more to our farm-
ing interests and the general
development of our country than -
a good system of public roads, I
will advocate every measure for
the improvement of our public
roads, with all due care as to
the placing of additional bur-
dens upon the people.
7. I favor legislation that
will divorce our penal and elee-
mosynary institutions from state
politics and such reforms in said
institutions as will prevent a re-
icutrence of the recent disgrace-
ful developments in those in-
stitutions.
8. I am opposed to ail junk
eting tours of the legislature
and shall insist upon strict at-
tention to the people’s business,
and if possible enacting all nec-
essary legislation within the
Statutory sixty days, th is ob
viating the necessity of tbe ex-
pense of an extra session. I
shall favor such legislation as
is necessary to perfect present
laws rather than new legtsla
tion, except such as may be
necessary.
9. I am in favor of ar econ-
omical administration of onr
state government and shall op
pose the creation of all unneces-
sary new offices, but shall favor
a liberal support of our Confed-
erate home.
