Corpus Cfirists Complains
The Corpus Christi daily papers
continue to complain of the op-
position which has been made
against their channel proposition,
and although they have so far
made the blame in a general way,
they have at certain times assumed
that Messrs. Burton and Danforth
have been fighting their prdposi-
tion.
To put the blame, if any there
is, just where it belongs, the Prog-
ress will state that the opposition
spoken of viz: the writing of
letters to the senators and con-
gressmen that the money should be
spent on the jetties instead of on
inside channels at this time, was
done by the editor of the Progress,
both as a personal matter which
he deemed his privelege as a cit-
izen, and in the capacity of chief
booster for the Aransas Pass town
interests.
So far as we have been able
to ascertain, Burton and Danforth
have madeVo fight on the Corpus
Christi Channel proposition.
A deep vfater channel from
Tarpon tb Corpus could but come
within a few miles to the lngle-
Yde property, which is owned by
Messrs. Burton and Danforth, and
the Progress has no doubt, should
the government decide to dredge
a deep water way to Corpus
Christi, Messrs. Burton and Dan-
forth will again show their enter-
prise and energy by tapping the
channel with some dredge boats
they have under contract, extend
it over to the Ingleside property,
and begin shipping operations
before, and on a greater extent
than the Corpus Christi people
will use what is provided them by
the government.
The fight that has been made
on Corpus Christi from Aransas
Pass has been made mostly by the
Progress.
The Progress did not start the
fight. It was started at Corpus
Christi, and was taken up b y the
Progress because the people of
Corpus Christi had led the attack,
and it was not oar policy to run,
ispecialy when our position was
;o well foitified.
What the Progress has si d or
one to th j disadvantage of Cor-
ras Christi, has been biought on
oy Corpus Christs interests.
W. F. Steagall announces this
week as a candidate for com-
missoner under the commission
form of government. He has re-
sided in this comrnunity for , the
last fifteen years and is well known.
He is president of the school
board, Secretary and Treasurer of
the Farmer’s Union, Counsel
Commander for the Woodmen of
the World and is at the head of
the soliciting committee for the
Commercial Club. His platform
is Build the city, everybody
pnsh for Aransas Pass, good
streets, deep well and a business
administration.” He respectfully
requests your consideration at
he polls.
C. E. Henry announces as a can-
didate for commissioner subject
to the vote of the people on April
5th. Mr. Henry has lived in Aran-
sas Pass since last December a
year ago, having moved here from
Salt Lake City. -He is a structural
steel contractor by profession and
has been closely identified with
some of the largest building oper-
ations in the United States. Early
during last year he began the
erection of the building in which
is located tne First State Bank and
this w,as the first substantial build-
ing which had been erected in
Mransas Pass. He does not claim
o be an experienced politician
b"t has good business judgement
and asks the consideration of the
people when they come to the
polls.
A Political Talk.
During its work of boosting the
past year the Progress has seldom
deviated from the straight and
narrow path of its text. We trust
our readers will pardon us how-
ever, if this week and • next week
should accidently contain political
arguments and discussions.
The fact of the. business is, the
publisher of the Progress aspires
to the office of Mayor when the
j town adopts the commission form
; of government on the 5th of
• April. He wants the job and
I seeks the honor \ at the hands of
j the people he is serving. r
To be perfectly candid, the in-
fluence of the position would
give an advantage in the capacity
of official booster.
It is our understanding that
there is not a large salary attached
to the oosition, hence vve have
no desire for the monetary remun-
eration,- but it cannot be denied
i that this lofty po sition, if it should
I fall to the lot of one so youthful
in years, would show that the
people at large were appreciative
of results rather than appearance.
Results are what count m the
world of today.
Atuough there has always been
| and possibly always will be a
I prejudice against young men in
j respon sible positions, investigation
will show that the managers of
the large concerns, the superin-
tendents of factories, and the men
who are making the greatest head-
way in politics and the most mar-
velous discoveries in the scientific

world are largely young men.
The reason is obvious.
The young men are showing
\
results.
It would seem to the casual ob-
server that the fact of a person
remaining idle in one locality or
position for a number of years
does not particularly fit him for a
position of this kind.
Especially if he has not shown
results.
Results are what the, people
want.
If Aransas Pass adopts the
commission form of government
the reason will be that it desires
its business transacted as a busi-
ness organization instead of as a
political machine.
The men at the head of the gov-
ernment should be those who
have demonstrated their ability in
business lines, the love of their
communtiy and their willingness
and energy to advance its best
interests. (j

Vernor Has Not Withdrawn.
It was reported on the streets
last week that W. H. Vernor, who
recently announced’as a candidate
for the ^office of mayor had with-
drawn from the race. The report
was circulated by one Hutchings
of New Yowk, better known to
the hurrah crowd as “Laughing
Gallagher” who has absoffitely no
authority for the statement, in an
effort to create confusion.
1 have been solicited by some
of my best friends to withdraw
from the race. Possibly some of
them desired to save me the
humiliation of a defeat, possibly
others have interests in common
with other candidates.
When I announced for this
office I considered carefully the
qualifications and disqualifications
and decided that I was capable
to serve the people in this
capacity.
If I should decide to withdraw
the people will receive reliable
information with my reasons there
for. Until they have received this:
information and know it to be re-
liable they will know that I am in
the race, fight if it must be, ant
that I am not a quitter.
Endorses Processor Fariss.
The following motion adopted
and ordered spread on the min-
utes of the Aransas Pass Commerr-
cial Club, a copy furnished to
Prof. Farris and the Aransas Pass
Progress for publication:
“To Whom It May Concern:,;/
Prof. J. T. Fariss has labored
among us for the past six months
as principal of our school and
has aquitted himself creditably
and we, the Commercial Club of
Aransas Pass take pleasure in re-
commending him as a true Chris-
tion gentleman, a public spirited
progressive citizen whose honor
and business integrity are beyond .
