who are not illusioned, nor
intemperate; who are at heart
true lovers of mankind. These
alas, are few. They are to be
emulated and looked up to, for
are the true masters of man-
kind.
We do not believe that an in-
dividual has been of much real
benefit to the world unless con-
tract, whether personal or through
works, and especially through
works, causes others to desire a
higher plane of thinking and
doing. We are not speaking now
of the spur of feverish ambition,
that is too personal, too self-pro-
motive, we are thinking and talk-
ing of a man s attitude toward all
things that affect his life and
work. We find that the big fel-
lows have radiated cheeriness and
general good humor, which at
high tide has resolved itself into
the laughter of loving tenderness.
We find that the big fellows dis-
play no idiosyncrasies in their
work, have not debauched their
ideals, nor strained for effect.
mg; have glorified in the red
d in their veins and ioved
well the' soil.
Jelly Dan Chaucer was always
at home and one with the sturdy
farmers of the fourteenth century
discussing farming, and even re
ceipts for making cheese. Y^e
find Shakespeare retiring, from the
stage and the writing of plays to
be a gentleman farmer of War-
wickshire. We find VirgsE glorify-
ing in the life of peace and agri-
cultural effort; and the great and
effective allusions off this poet are
those taken from farm life. Gur
greatest Southern statesmen cd the
past have been planter®, returning
to their plantitations after public
service was over. Abraham Lin-
coln, the solitary star of the North
in times- of our civil strife, was
farmer.
Men of the broad-gauged type,
such as we have alluded to, have
not permitted “Fortunes buffets’*
nor rewards to shake them-- from
the calm,, sane view of life.
They have never taken them-
selves too> serious, nor allowed
that dread, disease, inflation offthe
Cranium, to attack them. They
have preserved a fine sensei- of
proportion,, and a high sense: off
obligation,, ai keen sense of humor
and the kindly, sympathetic heart..
Now to. the point. Farm con-
ditions are ideal for producing
ideal mem. That means men
possessing, sanity, strong bodies,
good health, democratic ideals, a
sense off humor that never be-
comes caustic criticism, initiative
ambition, in fact all these traits we-
ar e accustomed to associate with
robust meru But these conditions }
are what we make them. Each*,
then, should strive to come close
to his ideals of life, remembering
to shun all destructive viewpoints
and. to think always constructive
thoughts, having in mind the well-
rounded character rather than the
one. that has become highly train,-?
ed.but narrowed from too much
specialization. Above all, let us
remember that while the world
bows in homage to the well balr
anced g;ieat man, tolerates but
does not respect and often ridi-
cules thue lop-sided genius.—Farm
and Ranch.

TThose darker souls who have
fexalted insane breedings, apothe-
osized licentiousness and made
murder a fine art, have never
^counted for any good except to
make people reset fro*m such de-
structive thinking and fall in love
with the saner: methods of thought
and living. These latter are per-
sons we should pity, but not ad-
mire. Theyr are sad reminders
that the social order is far from
perfect and that many are in-
capable of sustaining the strain of
outside pressure and internal
rebellion.
Again, there are moody individ-
ual who, when the body is well
poised and functioning itself
properly and environmental con-
ditions are satisfactory, radiate
cheerfulness and love of life; but,
when the reverse is true of them,
they fall into nature’s slough of
despond and breathe; bitterness
and revolt against life.-and society.
Such moods are stuff that a large
proportion of us aire made of.
They are deserving of encourage-
ment to learn the control which it^shouid be organised at once.
The; Sinton Fleadlight in. a
recent issue forwarded an idea of
organizing a press association, to
be composed of representatives
from, the newspapers in.this, sec-
tion. of this state. From the com-
ment noticed in other papers, the
move seems to be meeting with
much encouragement,, and if it
wasn’t for the fact that we are so
awfully busy, we would enter into
the spirit of the things, and insist
