The Teirelf Election law stands
just as it did heretofore, the new
bill introduced having failed to
pass and become a law.
The act of the Legislature ex
empting Zavala county from the
operation of the hide and an-
imal inspection law was signed
by the Govenor and became ef
fective April 10th.
As evidnece of an early increase
of population, the North Ger-
man Lloyd steamer “WitteKind’
sailed from Bremen to Galveston
on April 10th with six hundred
passengdrs and immigrants. This
is the first steamer of thei Lloyd
direct Galveston service, and
later steamers are expected to
bring immense numbers.
Some people have an idea that
a local newspaper, in a small
town, even at a County Seat, is
of no value. We know of one
place in this state which has
never had a paper, but where the
citzens are now compelled to
start one in order to get the ben-
efit of a law especially passed
for them at their request, by the
recent Legislature. The advan-
tages of a local paper must be
apparent to all. There is noth-
ing to lose and every thing to
gain by giving it support. That
it pays to advertize your business
and what you wish to sell or buy
in the Herald, was pointedly de-
monstrated last week by the ad-
vertisement and subsequent sale
of the Dietert Bros, cattle to Col.
Pryor. Within an hour after the
matter had been turned over to
us for advertisement the Herald
sent a prospective buyer to the
representative of Dietert Bros,
and in the shortest time possible
under the circumstances the sale
was effected and closod at satis-
factory prices.
The attention of the Herald
has been caHed to a news item
in the San Antouio Express and
other papers, to the effect that
the Cross S people have secured
a flowing well on their 100,000
acre ranch, flowing 750 barrels
per minute, and that this is the
first flowing well in Zavala
county. We do not know from
what source the Express receiv-
ed the above information,
but we cannot allow such an er-
roneous statement to go unchal-
lenged. The first is that Zavala
county had a number of artes-
ian wells for several years before
the Cross S people began to bore
There are now at least ten or a
dozen wells in the artesian bell
of the county, which have been
flowing for some time, a few of
them for several years. Ed Eng-
lish has two artesian wells, B. H.
Erskine has two, R. R. Ware has
one, James Oden has one, Cole-
man «fc Keeran have at last one,
W. Y. Davidson has one, A.
Boynton has two, and the New
York & Texas Land Company
has probably one or two, all in
Zavala connty. If we have for-
gotten any others we apologize
to the owners. Another error is
that the Cross S well flowes 750
barrels per minute. We are as-
sured by competent parties, who
have seen the well that it flows
perhaps 250 gallons a minute,
probably 20<> gallons would be
nearer correct. Even at 250 gal.
a ninute, it is a fine well. But
the point we want to emphasize
is that Zavala county has had a
number of artesian wells for a
number of years.

Best tough Medicine for children.
When you buy a cough medicine
for small children your want one in
which you can place implicit confi-
dence. You want one that not only
relieves but cures. You want one
that is unquestionably harmless. You
want one that is pleasant to take.
Chamberlain’s Cough remedy meets all
these ponditions. There is nothing
so good for the coughs and colds in-
cident to childhood. It is also a cer-
tan preventive and cure for croup,
and there is no danger whatever from
whooping cough when it is given. It
has been used in many epidemics of
that disease with perfect success. For
sale by all Druggists.
“We have used Chamberlain's Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy in our

p u ape, but never found anything to
equal Chamberlain's. If you will use
it as directed it will always cure.
