Patience's virtues are limited
Needs must be revealed
Opinions
by Ewart Jones
Beyond the everyday hectic and
strenuous life of your ordinary
newspaper editor lies the light at
the end of the tunnel. A seemingly
unreachable goal a distant fan-
tasy that only the elite of the elite
have some concept. It's called pa-
tience. If you are on this level of social
restraint I applaud you and your
entire family I am not ashamed to
admit my biggest weakness. Yes
it's true Ewart Jones has about as
much patience as a baby with a
wet diaper and a little less in some
instances. It's a problem I have
been working on since I was five
but the solution or solutions con-
tinue to elude me.
Through my life I have been able
to see what patience is and is not. I
consider myself very much an ex-
pert on when patience is occuring
or when it has run out. Patience is:
-When you can sit through an hour
and fifteen minute class without
once thinking about your favorite
soap opera.
-When you can wait 100 years (or
more) to dance on campus.
-Waiting in line in the cafeteria for
the last batch of steak fingers.
-Letting your little brown Celica
warm up for exactly one minute
before trying to drive anywhere.
-Watching high school football
recruits (complete with letter
jackets) stand in front of Ferguson
waiting for girls to come out
without feeling the urge to run
them over in your little brown
Celica after it has been warmed up
for exactly one minute.
-Trying to get through your last 64
days (and counting) of
undergraduate work so you can be
in the real world and get your pa-
tience tested further than it ever
has before.
If you are an impatient person
you are the one who watched
"Days" danced at the gazebo hurt
eight people including the steak
finger server in the cafeteria ran
over several high school football
recruits (complete with letter-
jackets in a little brown Celica
which had a cold engine and you
have decided to become a profes-
sional student and make Hardin-
Simmons your permanent dwelling
place.
You probably have other
characteristics of an impatient
person. For instance:
-You probably dump out your
"Cracker Jacks" so you can look at
the lame prize (they don't make
Cracker Jacks like they used to).
-You're the one that flashes the
headlights at me when I'm going
20 miles over the speed limit and
you want to pass.
-You read the end of mystery
novels before finishing the book
because you get tired of all the
suspense nonsense.
I know your kind because I'm
not far behind. But the last two
months made me learn much
about being patient. Production of
the Brand was delayed due to
equipment problems. No one was
at fault but that did not make the
wait any better. It was frustrating
to write stories revise stories and
even destroy stories that could
have been and should have been.
In the end though I realized we
(the staff and i) had to work with
what we had and to the best of our
abilities. Much time thought and
effort has been put into this Brand
and I believe the work has paid off.
Without the support of Randy Arm-
strong Dave Malloch and Charles
Richardson this issue might have
never made it. I thank them and I
thank you for your "patience." We
are definitely back so keep op
reading.

Pondering the reunification of
Germany the freeing of Nelson
Mandela the defeat of the San-
dinistas in Nicaragua and the
beginning of democracy In Eastern
Europe leaves me numb. Day to
day occurrences formerly big
news have become common

everyday world that makes HSU
and its environs our home and we
humble ordinary sinners its in-
habitants. This is a commentary and not a
judgement so please bear with me
in the next few sentences. I'm not
a theologian or even a Bible major
so if you feel only those people are
qualified to speak of the love and
power of God please stop reading.

Jesus said that " By this shall all
men know you are my disciples-if
you have love one to another." The
Apostle Paul said "The greatest of
these is love. " The Apostle John
said "Brethren let us love one
another for love is of God and he
that loveth is born of God." Ob-
viously God places a high value on
love. The second greatest com-
mandment in the Bible commands
Christians to love their neighbor as
themselves.
But do we follow that command-
ment? Hardin-Simmons Is known
as a Christian university that is
based on Christian principles. But
are the students actually following
the command to love one another?
A philosophy I adopted a long
time ago was to never turn down
someone who wanted to be my
friend. No matter how many
friends I have I try to remember
that It never hurts to welcome In
one more. In high school I hated
the Idea of cliques and promised
myself I would never be a part of
one. Instead I tried to be friends
with all of the jocks preps dopers
etc. and allow them to be friends
with me.
Please don't get me wrong. I'm
not trying to brag or blow my own
horn. During rr.y senior year I was
demn. Our common home has a
great deal of beauty and love less
the condemnation.
Last week I overheard a conver-
sation between two students
about the best way to use cocaine
including techniques. I had those
fellows judged condemned and
sent straight to hell in less than 30
seconds. Wasn't Christ's ministry
to prostitutes widows orphans
and sinners of all sorts? Jesus was
a man who laughed cried danced
and drank of life. This is not
heresy-as he was all God and man
and incapable of sin. Being a
pharasaic white-washed
sepulchre has never ministered
and never will. Find a need and ad- I
dress it In someone's life because
you will not ever be perfect. If you
could be why have Christ?!
If I can stop one heart from break-
ing I shall not live in vain:
If I can ease one life the aching
Or cool one pain
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again
I shall not live in vain.

student council and senior class
president and won some literary
avards. I give the credit now to
God and my teachers but back
then it was real easy for my head
to swell. As a result of that I pro-
bably snubbed a lot of people who
desperately needed my friendship.
This was wrong. I wish I could go
back and change that but I can't.
When I came to HSU last
semester I had the foolish Idea
that cliques would not exist here.
After all it's a Christian campusr
Why would one brother or sister
snub another? Boy was I ever
wrong. The story is the same here
as it would be on any other high
school or college campus. There
are still many students who are
reaching out to others for love and
coming up empty. Why? Do we
feel like since this is a Christian
college we do not have to worry
about our witness to others? Oh.i
how wrong we are. There are still
many lost people here and they
still need love.
I challenge you to soften your
heart this semester and to reach
out to others around you. Make a
new friend and see if you not only
lift their spirits but yours as well.
Remember: " Love vaunteth not
Itself and is not puffed up."
