Review (from page 2)
With the release of Pretty Woman
the second highest grossing film in
1990 it only confirmed that Julia
Roberts Was fast becoming one of the
biggest talents to jolt the movie
industry in some time. Then came
Flatliners which re-established the fact
that she could act on both a comedic
and dramatic level. Her natural charm
and unforgettable smile that literally
stretches from ear to ear was what
audiences wanted however Roberts
had yet been labeled as the leading star
in any of the films she was in. The
movie industry soon realized her
bankability and cast her as the lead in
Sleeping with the Enemy.
Based on a novel by Nancy Price and
directed by Joseph Ruben Sleeping
with the Enemy is a story about Laura
Burney (Roberts) a battered wife who
moves to Iowa to escape the clutches
of Martin her abusive husband played
convincingly by Patrick Bergin. She
changes her name to Sara Waters as
she starts a new life and begins a
relationship with her next door
neighbor Ben (Kevin Anderson) a
theater professor at the local college in
town. One of the most charming
scenes in the movie occurs when Sara
and Ben spend an evening at the
theater rummaging through various
costumes and props while dancing to
oldies. Meanwhile Martin has furiously
begun to track her down leading to the
climactic confrontation.
It is a solid cast but the real
attraction to the film is Roberts; Her
portrayal of Laura shows both the
fragility and strength of her character.
Laura's insecurity and vulnerability was
played to a teo while Sara's strength
and.self-dependance was equally met.
This contrast led to an excellent scene
when the film reached its climactic
ending.
The film offers romance thrills and
suspense. It is entertaining and is a film
that is worth the ticket price. It gives
the audience a taste of Roberts
capability to be the lead in a film and
leaves movie goers with the notion of
bigger and better things to come from
Roberts the future or even perhaps
present leading lady.
